| Question |
Salam,
I have many prayers from years of negligence to make up for. Should I spend my prayers during layatil qadr making up for these prayers? Is this the best use of my time during the blessed night? May Allah the Most High reward you.
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
May Allah, forgive us all for showing laxity towards carrying out our religious obligations and may He Almighty grant us all-embracing forgiveness in these blessed days.
First and foremost, you should start these blessed days of the month of Ramadan by making sincere and genuine repentance to Allah so that He Almighty forgives your sins.
As for the prayers you missed from previous years, we can say that you are obliged to make up for them and to start from now on to create a suitable scenario for that such as praying after every Zuhr prayer, for example, a previous Zuhr prayer you have missed until you are quite sure that you have performed all the obligatory prayers you have not performed from the previous years.
With this in mind, we can say that there is nothing wrong that you spend a portion of the blessed nights during the last third of Ramadan making up for the missed obligatory prayers.
May Allah grant us all the blessings of Lailat Al-Qadr and may He Almighty reward us all for our prayers and good deeds in these blessed days.

| Question |
As-Salamu `alaykum. I wonder if it is better to stay in i`tikaf or participate in the relief activities for the earthquake victims?
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thanks for your question, and we earnestly ask Allah to put a quick end to all peoples' suffering on the face of this earth.
If you live in an area that is close to the affected areas of the earthquake and you are quite sure that lagging behind from your duty to rescue your afflicted brothers and sisters will inevitably add to their suffering, then a priority should be given to the relief efforts as relieving the pains of those dying people is a religious obligation whereas i`tikah is a Sunnah.
If, on the other hand, you managed to perform i`tikah for few days in the last third of Ramadan and after that you can participate in the relief work, then we think that this choice is the best.
All in all, the Muslim is strongly recommended to increase his quota of good deeds in these blessed days. Making du`aa for those who are suffering, reducing their pains by whatever means, donating money and clothes to them are all acts for which one is recommended to do.
Allah Almighty knows best.

| Question |
Should I give Zakatul-fitr as money or grains?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thanks for your question, and we implore Allah to guide us all to the best.
Originally, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stated in his Hadith that Zakat al-Fitr is to be paid as one Sa` or wheat, barely, raisens, etc. However, some Muslim scholars such as the Hanafis see that there is nothing wrong in paying Zakat al-Fitr in cash if doing so helps the poor and alleviates their suffering.
Based on this, we can say that what matters is the interest of the poor. If their interest is in cash, then it ought to be cash or the other way round.
Last but not least, we advise you to follow the practice done in your local community after consulting a local community imam or scholar.

| Question |
Is night of Qadr, only night. And the time when your prayers will be answered is that for a moment or one night all nights?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thanks for your question, and we implore Allah to guide us to the best of deeds through which we will be eligible to receive the showering of His mercy in these blessed days.
Almighty Allah says in the Qur'an: We have indeed revealed this (Message) in the Night of Power: And what will explain to thee what the night of power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. (Al-Qadr 97: 1-3)
It is clear from the above Qur'anic verses that Lailat Al-Qadr is a night or that the blessings of Allah and His rewards are showered during a blessed night in the last ten days of the month of Ramadan. This is also clear from the many Prophetic hadiths referring to Lailat Al-Qadr or the Night of Power. Thus, it is a night in the last third of Ramadan. Its exact time within the nights is known only to Almighty Allah.
All in all, a Muslim should try his best to exert more and more efforts in `ibadah in the last third of Ramadan by making sincere supplications to Allah to accept his good deeds, making dhikr, performing night prayers and giving charity etc..
May Allah accept all our good deeds and guide us all to get the blessings and reward of Lailat Al-Qadr.

| Question |
Definitely there is a night of power, when is this night as per saheeh hadith, does it comes between `isha time and fajr time. Which is better-praying in masjid for late night prayer or in home?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Laylatul-Qadr (the night of power) is described in the Qur’an as, "better than a thousand months." (Al-Qadr: 3) It comes in the last ten days of fasting. Any action done on this night such as reciting the Qur’an, remembering Allah, etc., is better than acting for one thousand months which do not contain the night of Qadr. The night starts from sunset until Fajr time.
Laylatul-Qadr comes in the solitary nights of the last ten days of fasting. Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to exert himself in devotion during the last ten nights to a greater extent than at any other time.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said: "Whoever prays during the night of Qadr with faith and hoping for its reward (from Allah) will have all of his previous sins forgiven." (Reported by Bukhari and Muslim)
During the last ten days of Ramadan, it is sunnah and highly encouraged and rewarded to observe the sunnah of i`tikaf (seclusion) during these days in the mosque. If you cannot for some reason, you should be keen to observe the obligatory Prayers in congregation in the mosque and then to offer tarawih and tahajjud Prayers at home asking Allah to help you witness laylatul-Qadr and gain its great reward.
May Allah bless your efforts to witness laylatul-Qadr and gain its rewards, ameen!

| Question |
Salam. Now is the last third of Ramadan. Pls. shed light on how the last third of Ramadan unites the Muslim Ummah?
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Dear brother in Islam, thanks a lot for your question and we ask Allah Almighty grant you happy and blessed Ramadan and to accept from you your fasting.
In fact, the last ten days of Ramadan are very special in the life of every Muslim. In fact, every day is special for Muslim, as long as he is always mindful of Allah in all what he does; every day Muslim gets increased in piety and draws closer to Almighty Allah. But these days of Ramadan are highly special in the sense of their falling in one of the most blessed months of the year; the month of Ramadan, the month of the Qur’anic revelation and during these days comes Laylatul-Qadr (the Night of Power) which is described in the Qur’an as, "better than a thousand months." (Al-Qadr: 3).
Muslims all over the world must seize the opportunity of these blessed days and nights to do their best to come closer to Allah, cooperate with each other in righteous and piety. Muslims must abandon hatred, jealousy and envy among each others. They have to do their best to restore their lost unity asking Allah to help them to get closer to Him in this month and to strengthen their faith in Him in a way that Satan will not be able to sow seeds of disunity and hatred among them or to drive them away from His Path, Amen!

| Question |
Assalaam-o-Alikeum
During the last 10 days of Ramadan, can I'takaf be done by any other way (like praying overnight at mosque) and then returning home for normal day work. Some people go for 2-3 hours with the intention of I'takaf. My Question is that' Are there any other forms of I'takaf than full 10 days at mosque as we learnt in our Sunnah'.
May Allah reward you for this noble service!
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
It was a practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to spend the last ten days and nights of Ramadan in the mosque for i`tikaf. However, a Muslim can offer i`tikaf for a shorter period of time, for example one night or even shorter than that.
So, while praying overnight in the mosque, he is in i`tikaf and he comes out from i`tikaf as soon as he comes out from the mosque. When he comes back to the mosque the next night he should renew his intention of doing i`tikaf and so on.
I`tikaf is not confined to the last ten days of Ramadan. One is encouraged to do it any other time in Ramadan and other months of the year.

| Question |
Can a husband do intercourse with wife if he is not in Itekaaf?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thanks for your question.
Yes, a husband is permitted to have a sexual intercourse with his wife during the night of Ramadan (namely after Maghrib until the dawn prayer) if he is not observing I`tikaf. Sexual intercourse during the daytime of Ramadan is totally forbidden.
Thus, in case one is not observing I`tikaf during the night of Ramadan, he is permitted to have a physical relation with his wife.

Assalamoalaikum- I'd like to know what is the ruling for women wanting to do i`tikaf?
|
| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Dear sister in Islam, thanks a lot for your question and we ask Allah Almighty to reward you and grant you the great blessings and rewards of laylatul-Qadr.
Muslim man and woman are highly encouraged to do i`tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan as we know form the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Mothers of the Believers and the righteous predecessors.
A woman can perform i`tikaf in the mosque with the permission of her husband if there is a separate and safe location in the mosque for women where a group of women can perform i`tikaf safely.
She also can perform i`tikaf at her home, in the place where she used to offer Salah. This is the view of Imam abu Hanifah and others.
Given the above, a committed Muslim woman is to choose the view which better suits her conditions and family affairs.

| Question |
Salam,
In the name of Allah, the most Merciful.
I wanna ask about the restrictions in conjugal relationship during fasting. What are the conditions when husband and wife are in fast?
Thanks

| Answer |
Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Thanks for your question, and we implore Allah earnestly to guide us all to the best, and to accept all our good deeds.
The husband and wife are permitted to have sexual intercourse during the nights of Ramadan (namely after Maghrib until the dawn prayer). However, they are not permitted to have sexual intercourse during the daytime of Ramadan at all.
As for acts such as kissing and fondling during the daytime of Ramadan, we can say that such acts are permissible although it is better to avoid them as they may lead to ejaculation from any of the parties and the issue may end up with complete physical relation which is totally forbidden during the daytime of Ramadan.

Can I make I'tikaf the last four days, if I miss the first days? Or is it I'tikaf only if you do all 10 days?
|
| Answer |
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Dear brother Salahuddin, thanks a lot for your question which is a sign of your good faith and keenness to abide by the teachings of Islam. May Allah reward you and make you like the great Salahuddin (may Allah have mercy on him).
A Muslim is highly encouraged to perform i`tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do. However, if you cannot for some reasons to offer i`tikaf all the ten days, you are allowed and rewarded if you offer i`tikaf for a less period, like four days and nights or even lesser than that because one can intend to do i`tikaf for even an hour or less than that.
