Dr. Albrecht Hofheinz is an associate professor of Arabic at the University of Oslo, Norway. From 1999-2004, he held positions at the Institute for Advanced Study and the Center for Modern Oriental Studies in Berlin, where he pursued field-based and online research on the use of the Internet in the Arab world. To balance earlier studies that had focused on technological elites and the wealthier Middle Eastern countries, he chose to concentrate on developments in Morocco, Egypt, and the Sudan, three of the most populous member states of the Arab League. His research has been published in German; articles in English are in preparation.
Dr. Hofheinz, a German national, was trained in Islamic and Arabic Studies at the Universities of Bonn and Berlin. He received his doctorate in 1996 from the University of Bergen (Norway) with a thesis on a Sudanese Sufi reform movement in the early 19th century—whence his interest in long-term reformist processes in the Muslim world. Before returning to academic life in 1999, Dr. Hofheinz worked for three years in humanitarian and development aid, particularly in the Palestinian territories and the Sudan.
He is married, with one child.
