Answer
Dear Fatima, thank you for your question which any woman must be able to sympathise with. Unfortunately I am not a Muslim, and I can only wish you a good labour and a healthy baby, while urging you to seek the answer to your question from a Muslim adviser.

Question
Assalamo alaikom,

I've got 2 children al hamdoulilah: october 2003 I had a miscarriage and I've been trying since for a baby but no succes al hamdoulilah. I did a blood test and it was fine, my husband had his sperm tested and it was also fine. So what should we do inchaALLAH.

Assalamo alaikom

Answer
Dear N, thank you for your question about your present distress. Fortunately there are many more tests that can help in discovering and treating the possible causes of the problem, and as you live in the UK, the easiest way to set about finding help may be to see your own GP and discuss referral to your local fertility clinic. I would like to wish you a successful outcome.

Question
Dear Doctor, since 7 years I suffer from cystitis, about once a month. For a couple of hours I feel I have to urinate continuosly and it's very painful. Then it goes away. Now I'm pregnant and it comes ofter and lasts longer. I cannot take antibiothics because of the pregnancy. Is there a way to cure this disturb for ever?

Answer
Dear Magda, thank you very much for your question which is a very important one, especially about cystitis in pregnancy.

Urine infections in pregnancy may be more severe and lead to more complications than at other times, so that it matters a great deal to seek investigation and treatment when you have these symptoms. There are many antibiotics that can safely be taken in pregnancy, so there is no need to suffer without remedy! It remains important of course to drink plenty while you have symptoms (and indeed at other times, if you are prone to cystitis). As far as I know, there is as yet no permanent cure for a tendency to have frequent urine infections, though simple measures like drinking plenty may be of help. There may also in some women be underlying problems in the urinary system, which can be investigated and treated: so it would be advisable to see your doctor about this.

Question
Hello Madam,

My mother has a problem which is as follows:

She feels pain in her both arms, beginning from the shoulders to her hands. When she wakes up in the morning, she finds her arms stone-heavy and can't lift them up at all. She went to the orthopedics and he advised to apply Piroxicam Topical Gel 0.5% two times daily plus some tablets. She has been regularly using them but to no avail. Sometimes, she feels as if her arms and hands are sleeping. At times, she also feels pain in her left leg beginning from the knee. She has never been injured seriously in the past and is in her mid-50's.

Kindly advise.

Answer
Dear Shabana, Thank you for your question about your mother's very troublesome symptoms. There are many possible explanations: just to give some examples, there may be a problem with the central nervous system, or a problem with the bones of the spine in the neck; or your mother may have a condition that has led to a deficiency of vitamin B12 in the body. It would be advisable to seek further help with investigations and treatment from.

Question Is the cloning Halal or Haram? If so why?

Answer Before we start, I would like to say to Abdul and all other participants how honoured I feel to be a guest on today's live dialogue. I hope to be of some help in discussing your questions and aim to do so to the best of my ability and in good faith. I would like to add that of course I am not in any way trying to take the place of any participant's own doctor, who has the advantage of knowing his/her patients and of being able to examine/investigate them.

Thank you very much for your question, Abdul. Unfortunately, though I have been invited to the dialogue by a Muslim organiser, I am not myself a Muslim and do not know the answer: I would be very interested to hear Islam's view on this matter, which concerns us all.

Question
Salam,Dr.
I believe I am experiencing depression,my own G.P.has suggested that I go to relate,as a very bad part of my marriage is a reacurrent issue in my life.I soley at present rely on Allah, yet each day is harder,Am I depressed? My physical will is very low, constant mood swings, yet I never allow my children to notice.I do not want pills, just some sound advice,
Thankyou

Answer
Dear Maria, thank you for your question - it sounds as if you are going through a very difficult time, and you may well be suffering from depression although you do not tell me all the things I would need to know to be sure.

Depression can certainly be related to what is happening in your life, or has happened to you in the past. Many sufferers find that correct antidepressant treatment is of great benefit; it may be very helpful to talk to your doctor about your problems in the first instance: your doctor can establish how severe your depression is and if pills really do not seem the answer for you, s/he may suggest talking through your difficulties with a trained person you come to trust and who respects you .

Of course if you have friends or family you feel you can talk to and who will listen to you with understanding and concern, that may be a very good start. And there is also Samaritans, who provide a confidential listening service at any hour of day or night.

Question
Hello,

I think I have become travel-sick. Whenever, i go out in a car, i soon have headaches and if the trip is really longer, vomit even follows. This has made life difficult for me. Can you please advise?

Also, my eyes ache much, particularly when i am watching tv or working on a computer. When i wake up, they ache too especially when i sleep late and wake late.I regularly use Optrex eye drops. Is there any other method as well?

Answer
Dear Naima, thank you for your question - it sounds as if car sickness has become a real problem for you. Simple remedies are available, in the UK they are sold by pharmacists who can advise people on the best choice for them, though I'm not sure if the same service exists where you live - Pharmacists can advise simple remedies for eye symptoms too: though a proper eye check by a doctor or optician/ophthalmologist is advisable if your symptoms are persistent.

Question
My daughter was born 16wks early. She was in hospital for 3 months in total needing help with breathing etc. She is now doing well alhamdullilah & is 1 yr old, although her corrected age is 8months.

She will not drink any milk, I have tried in a bottle, beaker, cup etc. She is supposed to be drinking Nutriprem 2, which is a special formular for premature babies. I try to add milk to her food, however, i am worried that she is not getting enough calcium & all the other nutrients which is added to the formular milk.

I have started to give her foods which contain cows milk (yoghurt, cheese, custard etc.) Am I able to give her cows milk now instead of the formular milk in her bottle (she may drink this). I know you are supposed to wait till the baby is 1 year old, and although my baby is 1 year old, her corrected age is 8 months. Therefore should I wait to give her cows milk till her corrected age is 1 year or is it ok to give it to her now? What are the risks of giving cows milk too early?

Answer
Thank you for question Yasmeen. It sounds as if your daughter had a very difficult first three months and is doing really well now. I think you require very specific advice tailored to her exact needs: do you have a health visitor or GP who knows you daughter and her detailed medical history? I feel it would be advisable to contact them about this.

Question
For the past 8 years i have suffered with irritable bowel syndrome. ive been on pariet on and off for the past 8 years and on constipation medication movicol for 2 years. However, since a month ago I have experienced lower back pain and pain in the rectum area. I should add that 3 years ago i had piles rubber banded. Is there something more than just ibs going on? I must mention that i have NOT had movicol for the past 2 weeks and my bowels work better than ever.

Answer
Thank you for that question Sally: as so often, it sounds from your last remark that the patient knows best what actually suits or doesnt suit them. Any new symptoms in an IBS sufferer deserve to be considered properly, and not necessarily attributed to IBS. Your new pain may be unrelated, and as it has persisted for a month, it would be entirely reasonable to consult your gp about it.

Question
Assalamu alaikum. I am married to my husband for the past 6 months, but we are stil waiting God to answer our prayer regarding the pregenance. Though both of us have undergone various tests at the hospital and we were certified healthy and capable of bearing children. But, my worriness increases this day when my monthly periods continues for the first time in my life beyond 5 days,(up to 12 days) but with just a small stain after the 5th days. Is that a sign of infection?

Answer
Thank you for your question, Muinat - your unusual and longer period this month may not be a sign of infection or other trouble, but I can't be sure; so it may be advisable to see a doctor and check it out. This is obviously a time of waiting and hoping for you - I hope soon your wish for a pregnancy may be granted you.

Question
Asslam alaikum. This is my second question. I sometimes experience some discharges early in the morning after waking up, is it a sign of infection?

Answer
Dear Muinat, thank you for your further question. Again, it is difficult to answer without examining the patient: such a discharge is not necessarily a sign of infection, but it may be: the only way to be sure would be to send a swab of the discharge to a laboratory for tests. I'm very sorry I can't give you a more helpful answer.

Question
I have one hip slightly higher than the other. would this affect having babies? also, my back is really weak

Answer
Thank you Muslimah- this is a very important question. I don't know anything about your past medical history, so I can't be sure: but it is possible that your hip and back problems indicate a bone condition that could affect pregnancy and labour, so it would be advisable to check with your doctor if there are any investigations or treatment you need to avoid future difficulties.

What do you recommend for someone who is afflicted by the Jinns, he does not have epilepsy, he starts shaking when the koran is recited and a person inside him starts talking in arabic and then he skakes really hard otherwise he's a healthy, smart, not psychological problem. Thank you

Answer
Thank you for your question- it sounds a distressing problem, and one a non-muslim non-specialist doctor like myself is not able to answer properly. It sounds as if you have made sure the person you mention does not suffer from epilepsy, and I'm glad he's otherwise healthy. I hope you do find someone who can advise you on his question.

Answer
Thank you sister for your question - bleeding that persists and is getting more severe does need to be investigated. It's certainly possible that the tests discover no very serious disease: but I would urge you to see a doctor as soon as possible for an examination and investigations.
