Question
Dear sir,

I have this terrible problem with allergies. Whenever i get a cold (the flu) it always begins with horrible congestion of my sinuses and then it must latter on sink down to my lungs and i almost always get bronchitis or a sort of horrible coughing whenever i get a simple cold. this stays with me for at least two or three weeks.

I have taken cough medicine and all sorts of stuff but it doesn't help.

i need somehting that will prevent me acquiring allergies so easily.

is this an allergy of the lungs or allergic rhinitis? one doctor told me i have allergic rhinitis and the excess mucous goes to my lungs which makes me cough so much.

Is there any natural remedy for this?

Answer
Allergic Rhinitis and bronchitis are common and unfortunately untreatable diseases. Up to date, there is no medication that can cure allergy. The best treatment for allergies is prophelaxis (prevention). This means you have to find out for which allergen you have allergy and to keep away from it, but if you already have allergy you have to take some kind of antihistamines and local steroids such as sprays and inhalers.

You undoubtly have seasonal allergic rhinitis. Unfortunately, this is uncurable disease but there are many medications which can alleviate the symptoms. You can take some kind of antihistimines such as Loratadine or Finistil as tablets as needed.

Question
Doctor,

My ears are extremely sensitive. Whenever I get the flu I feel like they hurt and there is a 'whistling' sort of, what can this be from.

I have had sensitive ears from when i was a child.

Answer
If this occurs only with the flu, this means you have some problem in your eusthacian tubes which connect the nose with the ear. So when you have an infection in your nose, this infection goes through the eusthacian tubes into the ears. In this case you will feel pain in your ears, blockage, and decreased hearing as well as whistling. In your case it is better to treat the nose as it is the cause of the problem. So when you have the flu you better take an antibiotic with antihistamine and nasal drops so you will control the infection and keep eusthacian tubes intact.

Question
Can excessive mucous production affect our vocal cords?

Sometimes i feel like my voice is cracked from all the mucous.

Please advise.

Answer
First of all are you a smoker?? If so, you will always have this mucous over your vocal chords. But if not, then you have some kind of allergy or congestion over the vocal chords and larynx which usually increases at spring and the beginning of summer. In this case you should avoid dust and change of climate / temperature ( going from warm to cold suddenly or vice versa ) and you can take some kind of natural remedies such as an inhalation with steam and natural herbs. You can also take some kind of antihistamines.

Question
Salamaliamkum Doctor,

I always have a stuffy nose. I am beginning to become irritated that my nose never clears. Is there any way to reduce the congestion of my nose without having to use nose drops which they say is dangerous?

Answer
Initially you have to do an x-ray of the sinuses. If there is no infection in your sinuses, this means that you have some sort of allergy which is called Vasomotor Rhinitis. This disease is uncurable. There is no single medication in the world which can cure it. There are many medications that can relief the symptomps such as antihistamine tablets (loratadine, finistil, telfast, etc. ), local nasal drops for limited time (maximum of two weeks of continous usage), or local steroid sprays (flixonase, beconase, etc.) which cause no harm even on long term usage.

Question
They say that taking anti-histamines when you have a cough is not good since it keeps the mucous trapped in the lungs which makes us more prone to infections.

Most of my friends are prescribed anti-histamines when they have a bad cough, it works for a lot of them. So i would like to know, is it ok to take anti-histamines or not???

Answer
Cough is a symptom and not a disease. So you have to know the exact cause of the coughing and then decide how to treat it. We have two main kinds of coughing: Productive and unproductive (dry) coughing. If you have productive coughing, which means if you have sputum coming out with the coughing, so you have to avoid antisistamines and to take mucolytics and expectorants to force the sputum to come out and clean the airways. You may also take an antibiotic if needed. But if you have a dry cough, which means there is no sputum coming out which is usually casued by allergy or mild viral infections so you can take an antihistamine to decrease the allergy and the congestion of the airways.

Question
can you please tell me how to avoid catching flues and allergies.

Answer
The best way to avoid the flu is to keep away from sick people. It is also important to have a strong immune system. In order to strenghten your immune system, you may take in large quantities foods that contains vitamin C, such as lemons and oranges especially at the beginning of winter.

As for allergies, you simply cannot avoid it. You either have allergy or you do not. If you have it, you should know for what kind of allergens you are sensitive and to try to keep away from it.

Question
As-salamu `alaykum. I have a lot of allergies to pollen, dust, and animals. The last three years I've been getting migraine headaches in September (which is ragweed season here). There doesn't seem to be any problem with my sinuses at that time. But several times a week I get horrible headaches and just have to try to sleep until they go away. After a few weeks they stop until the next year. Is this an allergy? Is there anything I can do about these headaches? I'm also allergic to aspirin.

Answer
It is well known that allergic sinuses can sometimes cause headaches but usually not so severe as you described. But if you already have migraines it can be exaggerated by allergies so in this case you have to consult a local neurologist to find out exactly whether you have migraine or simply an allergic headache. If you have migraine, you have to treat two problems: Allergy & migraine. To treat the allergy, you have to avoid the allergen, which is in your case ragweed and dust, and to continuously have antihistamines. To treat the migraine, you must consult your local neurologist.

Question
I am a young man, 25 years old, I always feel that my nose is somehow blocked, and I always have the urge to scratch it. When I try to clean it, as if nothing there are no traces of anything. This always happens in the morning ??

Answer
You surely have an allergic rhinitis. If you have this problem only at morning you have two possible solutions: either to ignore it and learn to live with it or to have antihistamine tablets at bedtime. But as it is a disease whcih is not curable and it will last for lifetime, I advise you just to learn to live with it.

Question
When I smell a new smell, like flowers, especially in summer, I feel there is something stuck at the bottom of my throat. I attempt to touch it with my tongue, which causes me to start sneezing more than three times, more than twice daily.my ege is 28

Answer
You most surely have some kind of allergy in your nose and throat area. Unfortunately I can not give you any advice to eliminate this problem. But I can advise you to avoid exposure to strange smells as much as possible. When you have these symptoms you can just change the atmosphere and to breathe fresh, clean air. If this does not help, you can take an antihistamine tablet.

Question
I suffer from nose bleeding during summer, especially when exposed to sunlight, even for a short period. What causes that?? How can I get rid of it?? I am amenable to alternative forms of treatment, like herbs if possible.

Answer
This is a common problem in summer. The most common cause of this is breathing dry air that causes dryness of the mucous membrane of the nose, consequently this membrane and the vessels within it crack, thus bleeding occurs. The best treatment in this case is to use some kind of ointment inside the nose such as vasline daily especially in hot, dry climate. If this does not help, you have to visit a local specialist to do a cautry to the bleeding vessels.

Question
Hello doctor

In the summer, when it gets hot, I start using the air conditioner in my car and in my house. But every summer once I start using the air conditioning, I start to get an allergic cough. Is there any way to have an air conditioner working and at the same time not get an allergy or a cold because of it?

Thank you

Answer
It is well known that A/Cs stirr up dust in the area of usage. So it usually causes allergic reaction among people. There are no fool-proof method to end this problem, however, the new breed of A/Cs come equipped with special filters to trap dust and other allergens in the air.

So, you can either change your A/C or learn to live with it.

Question
Is there such a thing as a chronic cold, spring, summer, and fall? Whay is it called so, and how can it be treated.

Answer
There is no such thing as "Chronic cold" in medical terms, however, this term is usually used by people to describe persistant nasal discharge.

Persistant nasal discharges are two types: Either allergic or infectious. If you have persistant watery discharge, which is colorless or just whitish, it is usually allergy and you can treat it by avoiding allergens such as dust and smells and to have antihistaminic tablets, but if the discharge is usually yellowish or greenish associated with headaches and nasal blockage you have to do full examination of your sinuses and if it is infectous, it has to be treated by your local specialist.

I am 24 years old and have a severe inflammation in my sinuses starting ten years ago. I have tried many doctors but to no avail. The inflammation recurs from time to time. What would you advise?

Answer
If you have an allergic rhinitis, unforunately it is uncurable diseases, you just can use antihistamines and avoid allergens. But if you have bacterial sinusitis which can be porved by doing an x-ray or CT scan, you have to treat it by antibiotics for a long time and if it fails, you may need a surgery.

Question
Thanks brother for your service. I just would like to ask you a question which is not germane to the topic. I just want to know, does someone like me who is older than 20yrs still have the chance to enlarge or build his bones? I know this may seem an odd question. But I have a problem. I have very small bones and I hate this. My bones structure and my age are totally incompatible and this worries me all the time. I cannot even wear short sleeves. I would really appreciate If you could tell me what I should do. Because I thought that drinking alot of milk right now cannot even help and it is too late, because I have grown up. Please, help. JazakaLLAAH.

Answer
Since I am not a specialist in this field, I recommend that you visit a local specialist (Endocrynologist) in your area. Good luck.

Question
I have persistent headache for the couple of years now and only half of my head is paining. I went to the ENT doctor, got operation and was given a medication, that was 5 years ago. But still the pain continue on pestering me coupled with vomitting. Sometimes I take some pain killers just to relieve me of the pain. They said its an allergy and that I have to avoid heat of the sun, strong scents like perfumes, dust and aircondition. Recently I took some antihestamine and gel for my nose. But to no avail. This terrible pain occured 3-4 times a week esp in summer. Please advise. Jazak Allah Khair!

Answer
I think you have some kind of neurological disorder (such as migraine) and not a sinuses problem. Som it is better to consult your local neurologist.
