Question
Assalamu-'Alaykum Umm Sami,

Alhamdulillah for your recovery and may you have many blessings through the work you do!

With your experience with BCFE, would you say the old saying of "cancer knows not its victims" stands true? Or do you think cancer is caused by certain things, which actually can be avoided? e.g. unhealthhy lifestyle, unhealthy foodtaking, etc.

Thank you for your time.

Answer
My experience is very short. It has only been six months. What you say is true but to a certain extent. Breast cancer can come to anyone but there are some other factors that help to activate it. Especially if you have a female family history of breast cancer from your mother's side. That means that some are more susceptible than others due to their genes.

Also, what you have mentioned, such as junk food, are significant contributors to this disease, according to my understanding.

Question
how can prevent cancer?

Answer
I don't think we can prevent cancer. All researches are still working on this issue and they have hardly succeeded in controlling breast cancer, except when it is detected in its early stages.

Question
What are the first symptoms of breast cancer? As i am nursing my second child and its almost now 22 nd month, and sometimes i feel pain in my breasts specially left one, when my baby keeps on wanting more and more, and it felt like all over pain, and if i search for glands then it seem that there are glands all over the breast, and i am also very heavy breasted 38C size, this happened once.

Answer
The first symptoms of breast cancer are the swellings of the breast as well as pain. Sometimes there is no pain.

It is very rare that breast cancer occurs while nursing, as far as I know. SubhanAllah, Allah has provided women with some types of natural immunity.

There is no harm in consulting a doctor if that will make you feel better.

Question
Assalamu Alaikum Sister-in-Islam,

May Allah Almighty Give you strong and Healthy life.

I am middle aged (35 years) and little obese, specially after two caeserean operations and of puffed tummy. I fear that women of this condition have a risk of getting Breast Cancer. Is it necessary for me to have particular periodical medical checks? What are the early symptoms of Breast Cancer. Please advise, sister.

Jazakallah
Wassalam

Answer
Normally the international breast cancer associations agreed that all women after 35 years should begin doing mamograms once a year, in addition to the self-examination that all women should learn. It is a very simple procedure, it is usually done during your shower after your monthly period.

To do this:

Use both your index and middle fingers and move in circular movements over your breasts, first gently then harder then at last try to push deeper also in a circular movement. But do not remove your fingers while moving from one part of your breast to another because you might miss some areas. Be sure to also check under your arm pits as well to check the lymph nodes.

Try to diet since obesity is not healthy in general.

Question
Assalamulaykum,

How do you recover psychologically after the operation? What made you get over it? What kind of attitude did you have in order for you to overcome this situation???

Answer
Faith, faith and faith. I put in my mind that it's either me or this disease and I have to overcome it. If you have children, and/or a husband they will always be good support for you in this situation.

There were some backup centers in London that helped in answering all my doubts, inquiries, fears and suspicions.

I considered this a test from Allah and I have to pass it and I did, alhamdulillah. There is no doubt that I suffered a lot, but as I told you, if there is a will there is a way.

Question
Salam alykum,

I would like to know what you do at the BCFE exactly?
Please tell me a little about your work.

Answer
I am a volunteer at the BCFE. We try to help each other by gathering once every two weeks in a support group. We co-ordinate with the board of trustees in the foundation to offer our services at any other time.

We have taken training on the awareness of breast cancer and its early detection and to teach others how to carry out self-examinations.

The last activity we did was a campaign at the Gezira Sporting Club (in Egypt) under the name of Breast Health Awareness and Screening Campaign.
There were three stages in the campaign, filling out the questionaires which asked personal and medically-related questions. This part I participated in. After that, one of the volunteer doctors examined the women applicants whether a member or employee. The last stage was that if she needs a mammogram, we gave them a coupon discounted or free (for employees that cannot afford to pay) for them to do.

If you need any information about the BCFE please contact us at:

Question
How did you first find out that you had breast cancer? What do you suggest women do to discover it early?

Answer
Five years ago I had a benign lump under my nipple and my gynocologist used to tell me that it was a calcified gland. He told me there was nothing to worry about. However, last year in March, I started feeling new lumps co-ordinating with the old one including some pain. I didn't rely on my gynecologist, and decided to go to a surgeon. The surgeon then told me it was cancer.

You have to keep on doing your self-examination after your menstrual cycle while showering. If you notice any swellings or changes in your nipples, you must go to a doctor. You must first know, however, the regular shapes of your breasts in order for you to notice any changes.

If you have family history of cancer or you are above 40 you must do a mammogram yearly.

Question
Do women who recover from breast cancer have to continue to do periodic check ups? Is this available at the BCFE?

Answer
Yes sure. Women should continue to do periodic check-ups after recovering especially in the first three years every six months, there are special tests which should be done such as blood tests which include Tumour markers, x-rays, bone density and pelvic and abdominal ultrasonagraphy. After that it should be done every year.

It is not available at the BCFE, because it is not a medical center. It is a non-governmental institue. For more information you can visit their web site at www.bcfe.org.

Question
pls suggest some nutrician dieat for my sister suffering from breast &bone cancer

Answer
You should try to eat as much vegetables as you can especially celery, broccoli, lettuce with yoghurt. Black seed is also known to increase the body's immunity. If you toast it and grind it then add pure honey to it you can take one spoon every morning before breakfast. In addition to dates.

Also, carrot juice is very good for your immunity and general health.

Fresh fruits in general are a very good option.

There is a very good natural ingredient in your country called 'haltita'. You can take a very small portion of 'haltita', about the size of a lentil, and mix it with a natural gum called 'murrah'(Frankincense) in the same quantity and add it to one tablespoon of honey with one mashed garlic. This combination should be taken daily for three months and inshAllah this will be beneficial. This has been tried.

This should be done in addition to the regular medication prescribed by your doctor. I have asked the doctors in London and there is no harm taking this throughout your treatment.

Question
Assalamu alaikum. Would you recommend treating breast cancer inside the Arab world or go to Europe or the US?

Thank you.

Answer
I cannot discredit the Arab world as I continued my medication in Cairo. But still, Europe, where I received my treatment and had my surgery done, is more advanced in many ways. Especially the humane aspect of the situation and psychologically. As well as the nursing after the operation. They were really angels on earth.
