Question
My ramadan didn't go well at all, I never felt closer to Allah, and it just felt like a ritual. I was very distracted all through out it, in fact I did not even know its over already. how can i make up for this?
Answer
Thank you for joining this live dialog. You are not alone in feeling that Ramadan felt to you like a ritual and that you never really felt close to Allah. There are Muslims around the world who feel like this and indeed all of us are at risk of feeling like this. One of the desirable qualities of a believer is that he or she is never content with his or her relationship with Allah and always strives to improve that relationship. We are given a chance during the blessed month of Ramadan to come face to face with our souls and to understand really who we are, without any external influences. According to the Prophetic teachings, shaitan is not capable of influencing our thinking during Ramadan because he is chained, the doors of hellfire are locked and the doors of paradise are open. Despite this merciful advantage given to us by Allah Most High, we take Ramadan for granted and do nothing to prepare for it, and are therefore unable to make the most of it. We urge you to seek forgiveness from Allah for whatever shortcomings you experienced during the actual month of Ramadan. In the tradition of the beloved companions of the Prophet Muhammad (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam), we should be making du’a to Allah to accept our deeds during Ramadan, to help us sustain the good worship habits we developed during Ramadan, and most importantly, to let us live to witness and experience another Ramadan. Don’t be too hard on yourself. There is still much you could do to strengthen your relationship with Allah. Focus on establishing the prayer on time and if possible, at the masjid. Observe the voluntary fasts on Mondays and Thursdays. Draw nearer to Allah through reading the Qur’an, with the meaning and spend your free time in service of others. Make a special promise to Allah that next Sha’baan, you will begin to discipline yourself and prepare yourself for a spiritually uplifting Ramadan. Spend time reading articles and books about Ramadan and listen to lectures as well, which exlpain the blessings of Ramadan and how to make the most of the month! And Allah knows best.

Question
am working in a bank and i dont use to do night vigil becos of the nature of my work.but during this month i was able to do some.now my question is what can i do after this month?
Answer
Thank you for joining this live dialog. May Allah accept all of our fasting, and other acts of worship during this Ramadan. It is good to know that you were able to participate in some the tarawih prayers and perhaps even the qiyaam ul layl this Ramadan. As for what to do after Ramadan, it is important to remember that the 29 or 30 days of fasting and praying and reading the Qur’an are intended to help us establish and maintain a spiritual routine throughout the year. Although certain aspects of the month of Ramadan are unique, as was the Prophetic tradition, you can continue to fast voluntarily on Mondays and Thursdays, and you can pray voluntary prayers in the last third of the night. The critical part is to establish a routine which is not to difficult for you so that you can be consistent in your efforts to please Allah. If you can, it would be good to attempt to adjust your work schedule next year to allow you to benefit from the Ramadan blessings more fully. Allah knows best.

Question
Salam alaikom and eid mubarak. I couldn't fast as I was breastfeeding so ramadan felt quite strange. Anyway I intend to fast in winter when the days are shorter and it will be more easier for me whilst I am breastfeeding. Some sisters told me that it was cheating in a way, I wanted to know what do you think. May ALLAH bless all my community and eid mubarak.
Answer
Wa alaykum as salam and 'eid mubarak to you as well.

Thank you for joining this live dialog. We urge you to use the link below to understand better what fasting is, and some of the rules associated with fasting. As you will find in that response from the Islamic scholars at Islam Online, the nursing mother need only make up her fasts. The sisters who are expressing their opinion that you are cheating if you make up the fasts during winter when the days are shorter should be thanked for their opinion but you are not obligated to either listen to their opinions or to be influenced by them. Make your intention to please Allah and to engage in worship sincerely, and insha'Allah that will be enough. If you have particular additional questions about fasting and making up the fasts, please also submit your question via the regularly scheduled general fatwa sessions and the "Ask the Scholar" section, both of which are accessible via the main home page of Islam Online. Allah knows best.

Question
Assalaamalaikum

Ramadan has gone so fast this year- Hope your Ramadan went well too , Alhamdulillah
mine went well.
I wanted to know if one backbites about someone does he have to go and tell that person about what exactly he told about him behind his back in order to wipe out the sin?
Answer Thank you for the well wishes and for joining this live dialog.

Sinful conduct can only be forgiven or wiped out by Allah, however this does not relieve us of the obligation to seek forgiveness from those to whom we have caused some injury or pain. In the case of backbiting, you can apologize to the person about whom you were backbiting and seek that person's forgiveness. However, it is not advisable to repeat everything that was said about the person behind their back because doing so might cause them tremendous pain and add insult to injury. Admitting one's fault and seeking forgiveness from fellow human beings will at least pave the way for our repentance to be accepted by Allah. There are additional references below on the topic of backbiting from our scholars at Islam Online. Allah knows best.

Question
Assalamu Alaikum, Alhamdulillah I tried my best with fasting, prayers, supplication, dhikr, Qiyam layl however, I failed to convince my husband. He did not fast, pray or give zakath...His excuse is he is too busy with work..His reason for not giving zakath is that he pays tax to US government which is equivalent to zakath..I don't know how to help him realize that what he is doing is wrong...I really want him to understand that this world is temporary...Money and material is not going to benefit us...How can I help him...Playing Islamic audios are not helping nor is he willing to read anything Islamic...How can I change him please help me help him..Jazakallah khair..
Answer Thank you for joining this live dialog. May Allah accept all of our acts of worship this Ramadan and help us to sustain this spirit throughout the year. Ameen.

While there is limited time during this live dialog to respond to your question at length, we can assure you that you are not alone. There are married couples who could relate to your feelings of frustration with being married to someone who does not fast, pray or give zakat. We recommend highly that you seek out the local Imam or trusted elders whom your husband respects, so that they will help him to come to his senses about his obligations to Allah and to his family. If after much effort your husband does not change his ways and continues to disobey the command from Allah to pray, to fast and to give zakat, you should involve your family and the local Imam to consider what options you have with regards to remaining married to him. We hope it does not get to that point and wish you the best. Make lots of du'a to Allah to guide your husband. Allah knows best.

Question
Is it allowed to wipe off the socks while making Wazy during itakaf.
Answer
Thank you for joining this live dialog. Due to the nature of your question, we recommend that you submit it during one of the regularly scheduled general fatwa sessions or via the "Ask the Scholars" section, both of which are available via the main Islam Online website.

Although not particularly related to the state of 'itikaaf, below is a question/response dealing with the general conditions for wiping over the socks in terms of wudu. Allah knows best.

Question
Assalaamalaikum

I don't know why but usually in Taraweeh I gt distracted and am unable to follow and there's no Khushoo leading to unsatisfaction and sadness that I could not concentrate all along , even on Laylat Ul Qadr I was so tired I could not pray effectively and felt sad.
Answer
Thank you for joining this live dialog. You are not alone in being distracted during tarawih prayers, or even feeling tired and not praying effectively during important nights such as Laylatul Qadr. Most of us do not prepare well for the tarawih or the qiyam prayers and so we end up actually finding these prayers a burden on us rather than uplifting us spiritually and energizing us to worship Allah more often and with sincerity. Don't feel sad, do something to change this condition and practice so that you will have a better Ramadan experience next year insha'Allah. Throughout the year, take time out of your schedule to observe the voluntary fasts on Mondays and Thursdays and then to stand in prayer during the last third of the night. At the beginning of Prophethood, the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam was asked to prepare himself(see Sura Muzzammil) to shoulder a heavy burden, i.e. the revelation of the Qur'an and the establishment of Islam on earth. Among the things the Prophet had to do was to stand in prayer during the night - first-hand spiritual training. Similarly, as you practice praying and fasting in this manner, you will begin to appreciate the experience of drawing nearer to Allah. Also, if are not a native Arabic speaker, spend time reading the meaning of the Qur'an in your native language. The more you read the Qur'an with its meaning, the more you will be able to comprehend when the Qur'an is being recited in the tarawih prayers.

Seek Allah's forgiveness for any shortcomings you experienced this Ramadan and appeal to Allah to grant you the opportunity to witness the next Ramadan. Allah knows best.
