Question
Assalamualaikum warahmatullah dear sister,
I am a medical student so my days are like those who go to work. I find that my son (15 months old) recently does not want to eat much or drink expressed breastmilk when I am not around. He also does not want to eat when I am home and just wants to nurse all the time (every hour for up to 30 minutes!) even at night. Is this normal? Should I be worried? Jazakillah Alkhayr
Answer
you need to spend more time with him because he probably feels your abscence, and compensates by breastfeeding for a long time. Try to feed him while you are out with him and while he is with other children in order to encourage him. Decrease the frequency of breastfeeding (don't offer, but don't refuse). Try to engage him in some activities that could distract his attention. Good luck.

Some people believe that certain foods are responsible for increasing milk in the mother's breasts. Is it true, and what are these foods?
Answer
Actually, some food can increase milk. Foods like Fenugreek (Helba, in Arabic)can increase milk, but the most important factor is frequent breastfeeding without scheduling, i.e. on demand. You should stop any pacifiers and the baby should be put with a very wide open mouth on the breast.

Question
My sister gave birth 3 months ago. She breastfeeds and gives bottle feeding at the same time. Is that better because she will take the benefits of both breastfeeding and formula?
Answer
Good question. Many people believe that formula and breastfeeding are equivocal. However, this is not true. Babies should be fed breast milk only for the first six months. Formula feeding before one year might be risky as it is cows' milk. Cow's milk protein is allergenic to some babies.

Question
Other than special types of food, how can a mother increase the amount of milk in her breasts?
Answer
Breastfeeding should start in the first hour after birth, and this can guarantee good milk flow for two years.
Here are some tips that might help:
- Provide on-demand feeding with no scheduling and no pacifiers and no bottles
- Maintain night breastfeeding and let the baby finish one breast before shifting to the other.

Question
Salam alaykum, I breastfed my daughter for 11 months, then she didn't want anymore. I suspect I had too little milk and she was tired of suckling. Now I want a second child inshaAllah and I would like to breastfeed this baby for a longer time. But how can I increase my milk when the child starts eating solid food as well?
Also I am quite thin and I have no help at all in the household and with the child, so tiredness and stress could affect my milk production as well.
Answer
Regarding ways to increase milk, please refer to my answer to a similar previous question.
You being thin has no effect on breastfeeding, neither do household efforts. The more you give your baby your breast, the more there will be breast milk.

Question
Are there situations in which the mother should stop breastfeeding her baby? If so, what are they?
Answer
Yes, in case the baby has galactosemia, which is a rare enzyme disorder, she should stop. Also in case of HIV positive mothers, or mothers who have herpes simplex on the nipples. Certain drugs taken by the mother might be hazardous to the baby, and in this case it is advisable to stop breastfeeding. These drugs are like cytotoxic drugs used to treat cancer, or anticonvulsive drugs.

Question
Al Salam Alekom
I understood from Quraan that the mother has to nurse the baby for two years, at least. Pediatrician advise mothers to start feeding their babies with solid from 6th month. So what happened when the baby stops looking for breastfeed and get his/her needs from the solid foods? What will he/she lose if he/she didn't breastfeed for the 2 years?
Answer
Well, it's ok to combine both solid food with breastfeeding. Babies will still demand breastfeeding after you introduce solid food. If you stop breastfeeding at six months, the baby will be deprived of the benefits I stated to a previous question.

Sometimes we hear about women who are not able to have their own babies, so they adopt a baby and try to breastfeed them. Are women in such cases able breastfeed?
Answer
You are asking about something called "Adoptive Nursing". It needs a lot of effort, in which the mother should mimic the baby's suckling by frequent rubbing of the nipples using breast pumps, and by doing a pumping schedules.
