Question
Assalamuaykum Dr. Hala,
I am pregnant in my fourth month and would like to know what foods i should eat so i can have a healthy pregnancy with the required vitamins.
Answer
A pregnant women should take a minimum of 100 grams daily of meat, 120 grams of fish 2 to 3 times weekly, plenty of beans, all kinds. Please notice not to take tea with any of these beans at least one hour before or after having any vegetarian-based proteins because tea will prevent the appropriate absorption of iron.
I also recommend mixed salads adding to it lemon juice which will help absorption of iron and other vitamins.
You should also take a monthly blood test called Complete Blood Count. If the heamoglobin (HB) is 12 or over, you would need one pill of iron-based pill, if less than 11, then two pills daily, keeping in mind that you would need a blood test to test the HB ratio monthly.
In addition, you need enough calcium, about 1/2 liter of milk daily. We also recommend calcium pills one course ( 10 pills ) monthly.

Dear Doctor,
Throughout my pregnancy my hair has been falling at a high rate. How can I prevent my hair from falling so much? I feel terrible.
Answer
During pregnancy you must take pills containing vitamins and iron. You also must eat a great deal of any vegetable colored violet, like some types of cauliflower, green peppers, in addition to milk and all its bi-products. After delivery you must take a multi-vitamin pills containing Zinc oxide, for example stress tablets with zinc oxide.

Question
Dear Doctor, I'm in the 14th week of my pregnancy and I'm experiencing a light bleeding since two weeks. The doctors tell me I don't need to worry, since the baby is ok, I just have to avoid too much stress, but I would like to know the origin of the bleeding. Thank you
Answer
Sometimes, bleeding is caused by a lack of hormones necessary for the placenta. Stress or trauma, walking long distances, heavy work, lifting heavy loads, or over activity may cause this kind of bleeding. For this reason we recommend bed rest or a course of Biphastone tablets to be taken until bleeding stops.

Question
Can you please tell me what necessary tests should a man and women take before they get married? I am worried about inherited diseases.
thank you.
Answer
We recommend visiting a local doctor to test for sexually transmitted diseases which may affect your kids first. As for inherited diseases, there are plenty to test for, most important of which is a test called Thalasemia, which is a serious blood disease comparable to anemia. If a child complains of such symptoms (of thalesemia), he or she would then require blood transfusion. However, different tests are recommended for different countries. Since we do not know what country you are in, it is difficult for me to recommend or even talk about any specific test you should take. As I said earlier, you MUST visit your local doctor for that.

Question
I am married and have a three year old child as well as being pregnant in my ninth month. I would like to calculate my delivery date. the time of my last period was 28/8/03.
I delivered my first time by suction, is it possible this happens again this time. thanks.
Answer
Dear Farah,
First of all, the dates you are giving me are not adding up. If your last period was on 28/8/03, then you must have delivered by now. And if it was on 28/08/04, then you are not nine months pregnant. I recommend you resubmit the question so we can calculate the date correctly. However, we recommend visiting you local doctor and taking an ultrasound according to BPD and FTA, or FL, delivery date can be determined exactly.
The fact that you delivered by suction the last time does not necessarily mean you will not have a normal vaginal delivery this time. We wish you luck and nothing to fear.

Question
I want to ask is that is sex safe during period, how many times in a week it is safe and to which month.
2ndly as my 2nd trimester is start now, so i am feeling burning, what is cure to it.
I feel like icthing my belly with my hands , why is that so.
Answer
During menstruation, sexual intercourse is not safe because it is a source of infection directly to the uterus. So it is preferred after menstruation. During the first trimester of pregnancy sexual intercourse is allowed 2-3 times weekly if there are no signs of bleeding or lower abdominal pain. During the second trimester, you can have sexual intercourse normally unless if you have abdominal pain or slight contractions which may increase after intercourse.
As for burning and itching, this appears to be a result of vaginal and urinary tract infections, I recommend that you do a urine analysis and be seen by your local doctor. For vaginal infections, and if you do not wish to visit a doctor now, you can then take Gyno-Daktrin vaginal ovules, 6, one ovule daily at bedtime.
As for the itching, this may be cause by insufficiency of calcium.

Question
I am 9 weeks pregnant alhamdulillah and I am having some bleeding. My question is can I still pray my salaah or am I najs? When the bleeding stops, do I perform ghusl and pray or do I just continue praying now even during the bleeding?
Answer
The bleeding you are experiencing is not menstruation, it is a form of bleeding that does nor require ghusul. However, according to knowledge and belief, you would need to make ghusul once daily, and perform Wudu for the every subsequent prayer normally.
Since I am a doctor, and not a Mufti, I very much recommend you visit your local Islamic center or mosque and direct such questions to those who are far more knowledgeable than me in those matters

Question
Salaam Dr.,
I am 12 weeks pregnant, Alhamdulillah, and would like to ask you a few questions.
(1) Due to financial constraints, my husband and I are contemplating changing my pre-natal health care provider. We currently go to a private hospital, which may be too expensive, especially if I do not have a normal delivery. When is the latest and safest time to make that change, as I want to keep a safe pregnancy and have my doctor keep full records of my 40-week term?
(2) Would you recommend a patient to go to a full-fledged hospital as compared to mere specialist clinics? (This is my first pregnancy).
(3) In my country doctors are very quick in recommending cesaerean sections. I would prefer to try for a normal delivery as long as Allah permits. At the same time, we are obliged to listen our doctors. Is there anywhere where we can draw the line?
(4) Though I'm only 12 weeks into my pregnancy and still young (I'm 25). I'm experiencing lower back pains especially at my left hip. Is this normal for such an early stage? I do work in an office where I'm stuck at the pc for quite a stretch of hours with few breaks and it hurts when I get up to walk. Could you recommend any exercise or therapy that would help ease the pain?
Thanks Dr, for your kind assitance.
Answer
Dear Maria,
1. On the 18th or 19th week, you would need to make a detailed fetal ultrasound at the private hospital to check for any abnormalities in the head, spine, abdomen, or any other serious defects. After this date, and once you made sure that the baby is healthy, the rest is to check the growth and development of the baby, something which can be achieved by other less expensive providers. We also recommend for you to have the Triple Test at the 16th week at your private hospital. This test will also check for any deformities. In addition, we recommend to take PP (post prandial) 50 gram sugar, FBS (fasting blood sugar), general urinal analysis, and CBC. These are tests necessary for the mother's health and recommend you have them before leaving your current health provider.
2. Since we do not know much about the current health situation in your country, we can not positively give you an accurate answer to that. However, generally speaking, antenatal care is usually provided at clinics, not hospitals.
3. There are many reasons that would require cesaerean sections (CS). Your local doctor would determine that. This is a very involved decision that only your local doctor can make. We are not in any position to make any recommendations as we are required to test the patient.
4. We recommend that you increase your intake of milk as it is a rich source of calcium. We also recommend local (Voltarin) gel applied locally. After the 14th week, you would also need calcium pills every other day.

Answer
A pregnant woman should take care not to catch the flu, cold or any of these disease, because these disease tend to increase the tempreture which may adversely affect the baby. Miscarriage is never safe at any stage of pregnancy. However, if you mean abortion in the hospital (DNC), it is generally safe unless the female gets a perforation in the uterus. Question
I am in my second trimester and since i found out i was pregnant, sex has been very painful for me. My husband said it is normal in the first trimester, but it is still painful now although not as painful as before. I feel really bad for my husband sometimes he doesnt have sex with me because it causes me so much pain even though he wants to. What can i do to stop the pain?
Answer
You probably, maybe surely, have vaginitis. You MUST be seen by your local doctor to determine the source of this infection. It could be bacterial, viral, or fugal. I recommend that you do high vaginal swab. As I said earlier, your local doctor will perform such test for your and that should ease the pain for you and your HUSBAND.
Your husband must also have a test of semen analysis and culture to determine whether he has any kind infections. Since you are only experiencing pain during intercourse, then we strongly recommend that your husband do such tests.

Question
My first pregnancy wasnt so good. I was pregnant with twins & went into labour at 24wks (16 wks early). I had a cesarean. 1 of my babies was born still born & the other was critically ill. She is no doing well (mashallah). What are the chances that this would happen again if I was to fall pregnant again? Is it likely to be a problem with me? The doctors did some tests at the time & couldnt find a reason why i went into labour so early.
Answer
The fact that you had earlier problems in the past does not necessarily mean you will have the same problems again. You must have a amniocenthesis at the 16th week of pregnancy. You should have no problems, in sha'allah. Good luck to you.
