I would like to know if you have other symptoms such as burning urination? Do you have to go to the bathroom frequently or get up at night to go to the bathroom? Has this problem been occuring for a long time?

If you are a male, you have to do an analysis of prostatic secretions. You have to also consult a urologist in order to fulfil a complete examination and exclude any neurological problems.

It can be related to infection in the prostate gland. However, there are many causes for premature ejaculation.
In order to diagnose this, we must know if you have other symptoms for example: Burning urination, perineal pain, pain during ejaculation, other urinary troubles. We must know the duration of this problem, whether it is constant or occasional, and the duration of intercourse before ejacualtion.
Erection problems are not usually related to problems in the prostate.
You must consult an andrologist to know the necessary investigations after examination.

There is no definitive cause of prostate cancer, however, there are risk factors. Recent studies are directed towards finding a genetic cause for prostate cancer.
It has been observed that many prostate cancer patients have changes in chromosome number one.
Family history is also an important issue, because the more family members who suffer from prostate cancer, the higher the risk.
Prostate cancer is more common among African Americans and rare in eastern countries (Asia). This is known as the racial factor.
Increased consumption of saturated fats have been also suggested as a risk factor.
The decision for treatment of prostate cancer is based on many factors.
1. Age
2. Examination of the prostate
3. PSA (prostate specific antigen)
4. Amount of cancer in the biopsy
5. The grade and extent of cancer
6. Presence or absence of metastasis
If the tumour is localized, there are different options for example: radical prostatectomy, external beam radiotherapy, Brachytherapy (planting radioactive seeds in the prostate). If the tumour is metastasizing, hormonal treatment is the main treatment. There are other treatments, but with less proven response.

I would like to know what the signs are of prostate cancer? How does a person know if they have cancer of the prostate of not? Please help.

Prostate cancer may be asymptomatic or the patient may suffer from some urinary troubles such as, obstructed and/or interrupted stream of urine, sense of incomplete urination, frequent visits to the bathroom by day and night, and sudden intense desire to urinate.
To know if anyone has prostate cancer or not would depend on the following criteria:
1. Suspicious examination of the prostate done by a qualified urologist.
2. Estimation of serum PSA which is a tumour marker of the prostate gland.
If one or both of the previous factors are positive, we must do a transrectal ultrasound of the prostate and take multiple biopsies and this is the only definite proof of prostate cancer.

are alpha blockers effective in the treatment of prostate? I understand that they have a lot of side effects, are there alternatives.
Answer
Alpha blockers are the first line of treatment in senile enlargement of prostate. Their side effects are usually minimal and dose related.
Other drugs that decrease the size of the prostate such as finastride are effective in large prostates (larger than 40 grams).
Alternative medicines, examples, saw palmetto have shown good results also, however it has not been standardized. It has nearly no side effects.

What's the best treatment for prostate cancer, surgery or medical treatment?
Answer
If the tumour is localized as proven by,clinical examination, serum PSA, pathological confirmation and a CT (catscan). Surgery has the highest cure rate. Radiotherapy also has success rates close to surgery.
If the tumour is advanced, hormonal treatment gives the best results. Surgery is not indicated at this stage.
