Question
salam alaikum:

The spread of AIDS is frighteningly fast especailly among youth. inspite of all the media and eduational programmes more and more are infected daily...i have read that an average of one person is infected with HIV every 14 seconds.
my question is do condoms provide the absolute protection against the virus if properly used? what is the percentage of risk of nfection by HIV even if condoms are properly used?

Answer
Condoms, in practical medicine can not protect from HIV, as seen in many reported cases throughout the world; and in real medical experience we can not call on a public health policy made over " broad usage of condoms " as a real safe sex policy.
According to scientific resources we can say that there is 2-5% of a chance that you can get an infection of HIV.
Remember lastly, it's not a matter of pregnancy this time , it's now a matter of a killer disease.

Question
Salam Alaykum.

What is the status of AIDS patients in Middle Eastern countries? Are they highly stigmatized? How do they cope?

Answer
There are 450 HIV positive cases. Knowledge means increasing awareness as well as sympathy and empathy.

In most countries stigma is decreasing gradually as empathy is increasing noteably, a lot of AIDS pateints are receiving antiviral drugs and proper care including psycho-social support and counselling.

Many health care providers were trained on clinical management of HIV/AIDS patients, and many families of HIV/AIDS are educated ,counselled and trained on home-based care.

Question
How can awareness prevent the spread of AIDS?

Answer
Awareness can tell you what are the behaviors that can protect you from infection such as, avoiding unsterlized needles, avoid sexual contact with infected partners, and avoid receiving infected blood.

Awareness can dismiss myth and misconceptions about AIDS such as getting infected by mosquitos, sneezing, coughing and shaking hands.

Question
How do I, as an HIV carrier, keep myself healthy? How do I prevent or protect myself from opportunistic infections?

Answer
Being responsible by avoiding sexual contacts with your partner whether infected or not.

Using condoms if neccessary during the whole sexual intercouarse ( latex condom) and spermicides .

Keep taking antiviral drugs forever, daily, without any interruption. Keep having continous medical check-ups, especially for early signs of OPI (opportunistic infections).Avoid smoking, avoid drugs, have bed rest, doing sports, avoid stress, learn how to manage your anger, and keep a healthy lifestyle.

Question
It is known that the virus cannot be transmitted through regular kissing. People say that there must be cuts in the mouth.

My queston is, first, do they have to be cuts in both mouthes? Or if one person has a cut (the uninfected one) and the other person doesn't can the virus be transmitted from the saliva of the infected person to the blood of the other person?

And another question, if the cuts are very small (ie no blood is apparent from them) or microscopic, can this transmit the infection too?

Thank you.

Answer
The cut must be in both mouthes. And even if the cuts are microscopic.

Question
I read that the AIDS virus can be transmitted through breastmilk, is this a hunderd percent certain?

Answer
Yes it is.

Transmitition from mother-to-child, before, during and after delivery and during breastfeeding was 35% before the AV drugs was been introduced in the patient management protocol.

Now the prenatal transmission is almost 3% if the mother receives AZT drugs during pregnancy.

Question
Asalaamu Alaikum

In Africa the people who are mainly getting AIDS are non-muslims. IF muslims go in to help them shouldn't they also be introducing them to Islam as it is the only way to prevent AIDS?

Answer
My colleague, Dr Rami (an Islamic medical scholar) will also comment after my small comments:

From my past experience during my masters in the USA back in 1988, I conducted a focus group research among Muslims and non-Muslims in Harlem, New York. We found that almost 0% in the Muslem comunity and 17 % in other comunities.

Dr Rami says :
It's a duty over each Muslim to spread Islam before looking to any other issue.

In the Quran sura 3- Aya 110:

"You are the best of the nations raised up for (the benefit of) men; you enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong and believe in Allah; and if the followers of the Book had believed it would have been better for them; of them (some) are believers and most of them are transgressors."

You should be strictly monitored and followed by an expert physician and receive the proper antiviral drug treatment during the whole pregnancy period.
So the chances of transmitting the HIV infection will be reduced notably, but you must urgently visit your Doctor AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Question
In the west patients, especially AIDS patients are treated better than in eastern countries. Even the problem of stigmatization and discrimination are overcomed.

If you preach that Islam came for all peoples why is there so much more discrimination in muslim countries?

Answer
Islam is a mercy for all nations as you and history tell, but Moslems nowadays are returning back to Islam after having been away a long time, the more they are get nearer, the less discrimination we will see.

Question
Salam Alaykum Dear Doctors,

Is the AIDS epidemic any more serious than SARS or bird flu?

What do you think if a good practising muslim got AIDS, is this meant as a test from Allah?

Answer
All of them are serious, but AIDS is more serious as it's a hidden disease (there are more than 18 million AIDS patients but there are 46 million HIV positive patients without any symptoms - and it has a long incubation period almost 20 years) besides its economical, political, moral, ethical and social problems that AIDS cause.

It is the only disease that hit our intimacy and our personal and confidentional relationships.

Sure it is a test from Allah, and who satisfies Allah's will and fate, will be rewarded for sure as this is a general concept of Allah's wisdom in testing people.

Question
I am very scared that I might have got HIV from sexual intercourse. I repented to God, but I remember I had pain in my neck (maybe the lymph nodes) like 4-5 months after the intercourse. Also I went to a see resort 7 laters and there I had red spots all over my body. I don't know if it was from being by the sea for the first time and sleeping in the very salty atmosphere or is it because I was in the primary Acute syndrome stange. I am very afraid. I don't want to do the blood test because I am afraid. At least now I can have hope and pray to Allah that I don't have it. Now, 6 years have passed since I had the intercourse and nothing has happened yet. I get cold from time to time, maybe normally, and sometimes I feel fatigue, sometimes no. But I heard teh virus can remain inactive for 10 years so I am afraid. Please help me.

Answer
You may have HIV/AIDS and you may have one of the STDs (sexually transmitted diseases), so you must make a medical check up as soon as possible.

My advice to you is to have faith in GOD and in the consequences of your medical check up which should include a blood test, and we will pray for your safety.

Repenting from sins means you are clear again regardless of having HIV or not.

Question
If i think that i may have AIDS, at what stage do i take the test?
What i am trying to ask is if i am newly infected with hiv will it show in the test? or do i have to wait for a certain time period in order for the virus to appear in the test?

Answer
There are tests such as the 'PCR test' that will tell the positive result at any stage of the infection; other tests may tell the results after 6 months.

But the first one is very expensive.
