Question I would like to submit the following question to Prof. Peter Sjoerd van Koningsveld:
How does Wilder reconcile these allegedly fascist passages with Muhammad's bloodless conquest of Mecca, with no retribution against the people that had tortured, oppressed, killed and exiled members of the fledgeling Muslim movement? Is there any attempt made to apply context to these passages, or to determine the reasons for, or the circumstances surrounding a particular revelation, and the resultant effect on the development of the practice of Islam? This information is available. Or is his film just another intellectually dishonest work of hypocrisy?

Thanks. and keep up the good work.
Answer You should know that the film itself has not yet been published. It has only been announced by Mr. Wilders. Because Mr. Wilders, who is a member of the Dutch parliament, has proposed to prohibit the Quran, which he compares to the book "Mein Kampf" of Adolf Hitler.
many spokesmen in the Netherlands fear that the film massy contain insulting parts. At any rate, Mr. Wilders has not shown any profound knowledge of Islamic history, so far.

Question 1- do you think that ignoring Wilder is much more effective than highlighting his insults and revealing his bad intentions towards Islam?
Answer If this would be possible, my answer would be yes. The fact is, however, that Mr.Wilders is receiving enormous publicity, and one simply cannot ignore this. Because of the negative social implications of his views and accusations, I believe it is very important that his views are critically studied and refuted

Question i dont understand how the dutch movie attacking quran can u tell me sir?
Answer
We are dealing here with a film that has not yet been published, which is being made by the leader of a Dutch political party who -at the present moment- is the leading participant in the anti-Islamic campaigns in the Netherlands. The political agenda of his party included prohibiting the Quran, closing all Islamic schools and stimulating Muslim migrants to leave our country.
The Dutch Constitution guarantees not only freedom of religion, but also freedom of expression. It is not possible for the Dutch government to take any action against the film before its publication. Yet, after its publication it may become the object of investigations by the judicial authorities.
There is some fear that Mr. Wilders will desecrate publicly, in a way or another, a copy of the Quran, in order to demonstrate that he considers the Quran of the same quality as the book "Mein Kampf" of Hitler. He regards Islam as a "fascist ideology"..

Question Salams,

What is the actual action had been held by the Dutch government, or dose it encourage this film as a sort of freedom of expression, and what is the role of the Muslims' community towards this insults?
Answer The Dutch government has tried to talk to Mr. Wilders in order to convince him not to cause unnecessary damage in the relations between Muslims and non-Muslim in Dutch society or in the international relations between the Netherlands and the Muslim world. However, the Dutch government cannot interfere in the publication of the film, on the basis of the Dutch Constitution guaranteeing the freedom of expression.
The government could, however, take actions after the publication of the film, depending on its contents, etcetera

Question Do you support demonstrating, as a mean of protesting against these works which offend Islam, or do you see that there's another and more effective ways to protest?
Answer Peaceful demonstrations are legitimate means, but I believe particularly in the critical study and discussion of these ideas. We should refute these ideas with intellectual "weapons", not with the use of any kind of violence

Question If the same matter happened to the bible or to the Torah, what would be the reaction of the Dutch community and the Government? Or that is a matter of freedom?
Answer I believe that the Dutch community would have reacted differently in the case of the Torah, in view of the traumatic historical events during the Second World War. Anti-Islamism is much in vogue these days. Expressions of Anti-Semitism, however, are immediately condemned.
I agree with such condemnations and want them to be applied to similar expressions of Anti-Islamism as well.

Question Among these series of anti-Islamism, what is the predicted role from the Dutch Muslims leaders towards this acts, which from my point of view exceeds the freedom of individuals?

Answer I have pleaded many times for the foundation of a think-tank in the Netherlands serving the purpose of combating anti-Islamism. I hope Muslim leaders in my country will follow my advice, collect money and establish such a think-tank. This would be a very important development, I believe.

Question Are you optimistic or pessimistic about the future and not so future events that this very significant yet unsettling development foretells?
Answer Personally, I am optimistic and I do believe that these events will be of an incidental and temporary nature. Already the attitude of my government, and of the majority of the Dutch people indicates the firm wish of bringing an end to these expressions of intolerance and xenophobia.

Question Dear Professor,
thank you for this opportunity to talk to you. What do you think should Dutch and European Muslims do to counter the effects that this film and similar publications obviously have in the society? Is there anything they can do and what would be most effective in your opinion?
Answer I believe they should unite and create institutions for the critical study and refutation of these and other numerous expressions of Anti-Islamism.
Dutch and European Muslims need an intellectual elite that will play a leading role in these matters. At the same time they should exercise political pressure to have these expressions of hatred and xenophobia banned by law and by the courts of justice.

Question Dear Prof. van Koningsveld,

Do you think this will launch a new anti-west wave in the Islamic communities around the world? As well as what happened after the Danish cartoons? Considering all unwise actions by some Muslims. i.e. Assassination threats, Bombing threats, burning embassies … etc.

Thanks

Answer I sincerely hope that this will not be the case. The big challenge of our time is to escape from violence, to find ways of reconciliation and dialogue, rather than destruction and fighting.
If the film contains pictures of any form of public desecration of the Quran, I truly hope that my government will immediately condemn such act and announce that it will order to bring its perpetrator(s) to justice.

Question Are there any programs aim at illustrating the ambiguity from the Islamic manifestations? instead of encouraging the anti-Islamism like what Wilders is attending to do.
Answer Maybe you could be so kind as to rephrase your question? I do not understand exactly what you want to ask.

Question In the so called "depicting Islam" issues, I feel that M uslims add oil to flame when they protest. I think if Muslims ignored, they might stop depicting Islam.
Answer There is much that speaks in favor of your opinion. The problem is, however that we are not dealing here with "tales to be told under the Christmas tree". The "depictions" of Mr. Wilders, for instance, are part of a clear anti-Muslim political agenda: prohibition of the Quran, closing down all Islamic schools, abolishing article 1 of our Constitution (prohibiting discrimination, stimulating Muslim migrants to leave the country, etcetera. I believe, one should speak!

Question As Wilders is a prominent figure in the right-wing party, does his policy emerged from the right-wing's party, or it is an individual attitude, and if the film was due to the right's policy, what is the main reason behind this policy which always attacks Muslims and immigrants generally?
Answer This is a very relevant question, indeed. It certainly is an individual attitude, but we are dealing here at the same time with a classical expression of genuine right-wing political ideology, viz. of nationalism, cultural purity, etcetera.
I believe the main reason behind this policy is the pursuit of power. Right-wing politicians hope to gain power by accusing minority groups of being the cause of all social, economic and other evils in society.

Question Dear Mr. Van Koningsveld, I have two questions. To what extent do you think the general academic discours has changed since the 1990s? When I did a research about Muslims in the Netherlands, I discovered that your articles were more popular in the 1980s and 1990s (true?), but after this period the political and academic discours changed in the Netherlands. What is your opinion about this subject? Second: do you think that the Muslims in the Netherlands will be able to organize themselves in order to have a accurate political representation, or do you think they are already being represented in the Dutch politics? Thank you. Regards, Gulsen
Answer Like many other things, also the academic climate changed over the last years, and especially after 9/11. But this, on its turn, will again be subject to change...

I do not believe that Muslims strife for political representation in any Western country. We see, on the contrary, that Muslims choose to participate in various political parties, but of the left, the centre and the right. Although there is political freedom, Muslims have not preferred, so far, to organize themselves in political parties. This fact is perhaps, the strongest empirical refutation of the claim of people like Wilders that Islam is essentially a political ideology, rather than a religion.
