Question why hajj months have this privilage though not everyone is performing hajj- and are they Dhul qeda and dhulhijja when pilgrims perform hajj
Answer
Salam Dina,
Thank you for your question.
Almighty Allah says about the sacred months:
"Lo! The number of the months with Allah is twelve months by Allah's ordinance in the day that He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them are sacred: that is the right religion. So wrong not yourselves in them" (9:36).
According to a hadith reported by Al-Bukhari, these sacred months are Dhul-Qi`dah, Dhual-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab.
There was a long-established custom of honoring those four months, by prohibiting fighting in them; except in self defense. Rewards of good deeds are doubled and punishment for wrongdoings is multiplied during these months.

But it is to be noted that by Hajj Months, we mean Shawwal, Dhul-Qi`dah and the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.

During these months Muslims who wish to go for Hajj make their preparations and go for Hajj. And others must see that they multiply their good deeds during these months.

Fasting is particularly mentioned as most meritorious in the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah; this is true of those who are not performing Hajj.

According to some traditions, by fasting these days, one gets a great opportunity to gain repentance and forgiveness. If, however, a person cannot fast all nine days, he may at least fast the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah, which is known as the Day of `Arafah.

The foregoing means in the words of Sheikh Ahmed Kutty, that "as the pilgrims are engaged in performing the great rites of Hajj, Muslims wherever they are, are also encouraged to partake something of the great spiritual feast and experience by performing such acts of virtue and devotion as they are capable of."

May Allah Almighty help us and guide us in all our decisions and actions!

Question Salam dear sirs/brothers!

I am delighted with Islam.I have read a lot about it including this marvellous and useful site of yours. But now, sometimes when I'm going to pray I am confused about the names of God whom I claim. Is Allah the same God as christians believe?I don't know anymore if I pray like muslims or catholics. Please show me the best way for not being confused. Thanks a lot.Salam
Answer Salam Cristina,
Thank you for your question.
Allah is the name of the One True God. Not only Muslims, but even Christians and Jews of the Middle East use that name for the One God. It is a pity that many Christians, especially of the west imagine, that the English word 'God' is the name of the One True God. They do not think that neither Abraham, nor Moses, nor Jesus spoke English. They used the name of God in their Semitic language, which was Allah.

While praying to God, you can call Him, Allah, or the All Merciful , the Almighty etc.

In fact, Islam is the latest and the most complete version of Judaism and Christianity, if I may put it so. You can understand this IF you study Islam from its original sources.

Kindly visit our site and send your questions to us. We will be happy to help you in your search for the true religion.

May Allah help you, protect you and guide you aright!

Question asalam alykum

I want to ask about this: are the deeds on Hajj doubled? Can I fast one day for two?

Jazak
Answer
Salam M,

Thank you for your question.

I do not actually get the meaning of your question. Do you mean to say that, during the days when optional fasting is prescribed during Dhul-Hijjah, is it okay to fast for one day and get away with two days' reward?

No believer would see it that way. So I think you don't mean that. The point is that during the sacred days when rewards are multiplied, worshippers exert more and try to get as much reward as possible. A utilitarian attitude to worshipping Allah will undermine the spirit and the purpose of that act of worship and the effect may be nil.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that everything is decided by the intention behind it. And so what is your motive, your intention? The reward is in accordance with that.

Hope you understand.

Question As salamu alaykum dear sheik--I am going to Hajj this year isa with my kids -going with small kids is a really huge effort to me -will i be having extra Agr (good deeds)?
Answer Wa alaikumussalam Muslimah,

Thank you for your question.

If you are going for Hajj with your kids, it may interfere with your actual performance in Hajj. Because, most of the time, you would be concerned about their safety and welfare. It would be better for you to leave your small kids with your relations and take the grown up ones with you. But as you know, everything is with Allah Almighty and He is the One Who accepts your efforts in His Way.

Certainly, you can expect greater rewards for your sincerity and efforts with Him.

And Allah knows best.

Question How can I benifit most from those months, especialy when I am not performing Hajj
Answer
Salaam Ali,

Thank you for your question.

[Please read the answers to the earlier questions.]

One way of benefiting from these months is to be more actively engaged in doing good works than usual during these months.
You can help those who are going for Hajj; and help people in learning about Hajj.
And from the first day of Dhul- Hijjah, you can do fasting until the ninth. On the ninth day of fasting, the pilgrims from all over the world would be in Arafah. They would be praying to Allah Almighty and you too can pray to Allah Almighty on the same day and thereby join millions on the field of Arafah spiritually to pray for forgiveness and the reward of Jannah (Paradise).

In fact, as Muslims we have a lot of work to do in this world; the only problem is that we do not find the readiness and the willingness to do the good works that are waiting to be done.

And Allah knows best.

Question How can I benifit most from these blessed days- I have this feeling that Allah is giving us a second chance for those who havent got the best of Ramadan?
Answer Salam Um Muhammad,

Thank you for your question.

Certainly you are right. After Ramadan, we are getting a wonderful chance once more to gain great rewards from Allah Almighty during these months.

The idea that the months of Hajj are only for those who go for Hajj is a big mistake.

During these months others who remain at home should be actively engaged in all acts of `ibadah (act of worship) and service in the Way of Allah, so that they too get immense benefits from these sacred months.

And Allah knows best.

Answer Salam Cristina,

Thank you for your question.

You pray to Allah:

"O Most Merciful Allah, guide me along the Straight Way, The way of those upon whom Thou hast bestowed Thy blessings; not of those who have incurred your wrath, nor of those who go astray! - I pray thee, accept my prayer and make me your obedient servant!"

May Allah Almighty accept your prayer!
