Question Salam alaikum,

i would like to know, what are the benefits of putting floride in drinking water?

Answer The benefits are none. In fact...it is an industrial by-product of the nuclear, aluminium and other industries.

It's first use in water was during the period after the US Manhattan project when dangerous fluoride leaked into the atmosphere and a justification was created on national security grounds that it is safe and beneficial.

Half Europe has now banned this substance from drinking water including Germany, Holland, Austria Norway etc.

Question
salam. If there are side effects to having floride in drinking water what can we do to prevent them? is there anything we can drink or eat that will offset the disadvantages of floride?

Answer
Wa-alaykum salam...

The side effects are numerous and varying, most are deadly. Symptoms are widespread and include among them Alzheimers disease, hardening of arteries, neural damage to brain functioning, brittle bones (needing hip replacements for instance), de-calcification of bones by calcium being replaced by flourine as it is more "available" than calcium as an element.

That fluoride is a dangerous substance is not disputed. A child swallowing 2-3 flouride tablets will die within a couple of hours for instance or to put it another way, swallowing a whole tube of fluoride toothpaste will make one extremely ill and for a small child, can prove fatal.

There are numerous such cases reported but are kept quite...yet it is still added to "prevent" tooth decay. The only effective solution unfortunately is to prevent the substance from entering your body. There is no safe limit as even small amounts are toxic given the fact that it accumulates in the body and after several decades of build-up will cause serious defects.

Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable and it is one of the contributory factors leading to autism. You may be lucky however, as till now some areas in the UK are still fluoride free.

Question
Has the UK already put floride in drinking water or is it still an issue of debate? What are their reasons for doing this?

Answer
Unfortunately it's not being debated but steamrollered into effect. Till now some areas of the UK are fluoride free such as Merseyside and Scotland (where they have wisely used their powers of the Scotish parliament and banned its use). It is likely by the end of this year all councils within Wales and England will be forced to add it to drinking water.

In the final analysis it can be said it is a huge corporate interest that gains benefit. Fluoride, a highly hazardous waste product of several industries has to be disposed of at great cost. Now imagine if this liability could suddenly be converted into an asset by loosening laws on disposal and instead it becomes a money earner. What a powerful slight of hand for those industries it would be and is.

However, there is increasing awareness on hazards of fluoride and it's only a a matter of time before we see huge lawsuits against the fluoride promotion industry akin to the tobacco lawsuits.

Question
I heard taht floride will prevent mottled teeth and help reduce teeth from having plaque and dental caries, is this true?

Answer
The exact opposite is the case. This fact is not disputed even by the official medical circles. Regarding preventative effects on caries, results show no better prevention than those areas without fluoridation.

The best remedy against caries I have found is to chew a small piece of bee propolis leaving it in the mouth overnight. Propolis is a natural substance produced by bees (in addition to pollen, honey and royal jelly) to keep their beehive sterile. It certainly works as I can testify personally to it. It will stop bleeding of gums and further erosion. Furthermore propolis has the highest antioxidant index of any substance known to man. Subhanallah.

Question
I hear that the muslim community in the UK are against putting floride in water, why is that? What are the reasons behind their arguments?

Answer
The only reason I can think of is that the Muslim community in the UK receives news and information from unofficial sources in addition to the BBC and other official outlets. For instance without digressing too much but merely to illustrate my point using the current illegal UK/US occupation of Iraq. Not a single Muslim to my knowledge exists who accepts that the invasion was due to WMD or to promote democracy or remove an evil dictator, as several dictators equivalent and worse to Saddam continue to be supported by the UK/US. So the Islamic worldview is very different and has access to pretty much uncensored news from various channels. Also Islam exhorts its followers to the state of nature, in its pure and pristine form as designed by the creator and not requiring improvements to make better water for instance.

Question
Assalamu alikom,
Jazaka ALLAH u khairan for opening this important subject for discussion, could you please let us know where does Floride come from? and what are the benefits of using it in toothpaste and water?

Answer
Fluoride as mentioned in other posts, is an industrial by product, a highly toxic waste and a liability. It came about in our water through a series of events starting with the Manhattan project which required large amounts of fluoride to purify uranium (the centrifuge process as used by Pakistan and emerging nuclear powers as the easiest way of doing this). Large quantities are produced as a by-product of Aluminium-smelting process as well as numerous other industries. The benefits are nil. There are no benefits. None have been proven. Those studies that show benefits are partial to the fluoride-producing industries ie. corporate interests which wield considerable power in western democracies especially the US. Swallowing a few fluoride tablets will lead to death. It is highly toxic and a neurological agent.

The case of fluoridation and studies showing its purported benefits can be compared to those that were sponsored by the tobacco industry saying that there was no evidence for tobacco causing cancer also this fact was known to them for decades before they had to admit this fact. How was this fact covered up for so many decades? How were all those eminent scientists duped into producing bogus studies? These are very interesting question and this is where the Muslim is able to think more freely.

Question
Salamu alikom,

I am 36 years old 175 CM tall and 85 KG, suffering from thining in the knees cartilage, could you please help.

Answer
Wa-alaikum salam brother Ramadan.

Cartilage does not contain calcium as done bone. Do you mean your bones are weakening and becoming brittle? To determine whether you suffer from fluoride related problems I would also look at your teeth as they are an easy tell tale sign. It is possible to reverse to an extent the problem of bone thinning. It involves first of all knowing the cause, removing this cause from causing further problems and replacing with a repair therapy to recalcify the bones. I would look into a calcium/magnesium supplement in unique ratio of 2:1. But please do not take this as a prognosis as I would need to ask many other questions, e.g. type of diet, fluoridation history, medication, state of the stomach (90% of illnesses originate in stomach, or what's put in there), etc Feel free to contact me offline for a more detailed chat.

Question
Assalamu alaikum. I'm not exactly sure what the debate is actually about. I thought that dentists, for example, say that fluoride must be put in toothpaste. So what is the big fuss about putting it in water? Are you saying that fluoride shouldn't be put in toothpaste too?

Answer
Fluoride is actually banned from drinking water in Germany along with Holland, Norway, Austria, Switzerland, France and several other countries across Europe. Unfortunately, most dentists (but by no means all) are extremely ignorant about the dangers of fluoride. Germany has a good number of dentists who in fact understand it's dangers hence it being banned in Germany in drinking water. I was shocked to learn that several non-mulsim German friends who told me that fluoride was a big scam by corporate interests designed so it can be added to water to solve an otherwise problem of disposing it at great cost. Whether it's in water or toothpaste the damage is there. Even if you don't accidentally swallow the toothpaste it will enter through the delicate tissue of the mouth.

Question
If there are no benefits to putting fluoride in water, or even if it's dangerous, what is the argument of those for putting fluoride in drinking water?

Answer
The arguments are that it is shown to improve the dental health of children in certain doctored studies. These studies are largely carried out by vested interests (eg could you rely on tobacco interests to carry out studies that would prove that tobacco causes cancer?). Furthermore these studies have been proven to be unreliable and the overall conclusion is that it provides to discernible benefits to children. What happens in practice is that front organisations are used to carry out the research (as happened with research establishments funded by tobacco giants) that of course produce either meaningless research or produce results that it is benficial. It's the way the research is set up and how parliament is lobbied by the moneyed powers.

The stakes are high. Imagine if it was suddenly acknowledged that fluoride causes, Alzheimers, brittle bones, dementia etc there would be huge bankruptcies on a colossal scale, huge fortunes would have to be used to pay up sufferers. Don't underestimate the power of corporate interests where £1 = 1 vote those with more £'s have the most votes, not you or me as is happening right now in parliament with current moves to fluoridate water by the end of this year in England and Wales over the heads of the majority who are opposed to it.

Question
What is the history of putting fluoride in drinking water? Which countries are doing it and since when? What is their reasoning? And finally, what countries refuse to put fluoride in drinking water and why?

Answer
I think I have answered nearly all your questions in other posts so please refer there. One point I would like to add is that fluoride also occurs naturally in some areas of the wolrd as hydrofluorosilic acid such as parts of India...and yes, the people in those communities suffer from dental fluoris, mottling of teeth, weak bones, deformed skeletons etc.

Question
What is the Islamic stance on putting fluoride in water? Is there a Christian stance on this issue?

Answer
What is the Islamic stance to tobacco? What is the Islamic stance on deliberately duping millions of people globally for profit? The Christian answer is likely to be very simialr to the Muslim one.

Question
what will the government benefit from putting floride in water if it is so detrimental to health?

Answer
The benefit is to individual MP's who lobby on behalf of corporate interests and receive nice backhanders. Scientists who carry out the research and who are financed one way or another via these same interests also benefit. The big losers are of course, you and me. Again I ask you to look at the parallels with tobacco as this case is finally proven without any doubt and totally accepted by the official establishemnt that it is bad for the health. Some Islamic scholars use the word 'haram' to describe smoking and I totally agree. With tobacco the governemnt is left to foot the bill for patients who end up with cancer and lung disease. We, as taxpayers, foot the bill but the corporations take in the cash from this vile trade.

Question
Asalaamu Alaikum

I have read that flouride is not good for people with thyroid disease. Or is it that the flouride itself causes it? People with thyroid disease are told to drink distilled water only. (not by doctors though).

Wa Salaamu Alaikum
Aishah

Answer
Thank you for this question. Yes this is exactly correct. Fluoride replaces iodine in the thyroid gland which is absolutely fundamental to metabolic functions and thus causes great havoc to its correct functioning. However, I advise against distilled water. It is too deficient of any minerals and in fact leaches essential elements from the body through osmosis. Bottled water is better. Or water that you know comes from a pure source. I know many such sources exist in Canada but I am not sure of Canada's fluoridation policy so I advise you to check on the internet.

Question I am not certain I understand what you mean by corporate interests. Are you saying that they want to put floride in drinking water just because there is no other way of disposal? That doesn't make sense. There is no other method of disposing of chemical substances besides drinking it?

Could you please clarify how these big companies will benefit from this? Besides, won't they also be affected since they are also living in the UK, so they will not go unscathed. Would they really hurt themselves for corporate interests?

thanks in advanced.

Answer There are other methods of disposal but these would eat into the bottom line profits of major corporations. Do you know what the cost of proper disposal would be? It would be astronomical, in fact it would act as a deterrence from the continued use of flourine in many industrial processes. Or to give you another example one which is universally accepted. The proper disposal of the radioactive materials emanating in large parts from the military industries in the US for instance would cost $300 billion USD. Now imagine for one moment if someone had a clever idea and used some of this radioactive material to produce a weapon superior to any other weapon one that could penetrate the impenetratable armour but the side effects were that it would be dangerous to handle, would cause before unknown diseases of the immune system, and linger on the landscape polluting it for thousands of years! And what's more this material would have been turned into an asset from a waste by rpoduct with no other use except a $300bn burial problem. Of course this material is DU (depleted unranium shells) as used currently in Iraq, Bosnai, Kosovo, Serbia etc. It's dangerous alright and will effect the sons of those people who are in the pentagon advising such usage but they have replaced their Lord with Mammon.

Question
essalam alaikum,

i have been saying this for years, as i have hypothryoidism and came to read in many places that this innihibits the production of the hormones the thyroid secretes. my question to you is, do people such as "deer park" or other major water distributors, who you can buy as "spring untouched waters" have the same properties as the public waters do? i asked them straight out, and they said no, so we buy our water from them. however, now i am wondering is no water safe? if not, what is the solution since we all have to drink it? and finally, can you please explain if boiling the water takes out the flouride and other harmful agents that is put in our tap waters these days.

jazak allahu khiran

Answer
You are absolutely right about effects on the thyroid gland. Please go through some of those links I posted in an earlier reply for more information and practical advice.

I can't comment on individual water retailers in the US as i'm based in the UK. However, I'd check with your local alternate health associations/local health food stores etc for specific information. Don't rely on word of mouth from the company selling the water. They have a vested interest to promote. But having said that in the US I know that the effects of fluoride are becoming more and more known to the general public but still a far way to come on a par with some other countries.

Boiling does not, unfortunately, remove the fluorine in the water as it is chemically dissolved unlike chlorine which does in fact evaporate. Buy bottled if you can afford it from a reputable source. Again check them out first especially if you suffer from hypothyroidism. Also don't forget about toothpaste which is just as important. Nowadays you can buy unfluoridiated toothpaste from supermarkets at least in the UK.

Also there is the possibility of using rainwater, but this will need to cleaned and boiled to make it drinkable and unfortunately may contain several atmospheric pollutants in addition.

Question
What stage has the legal debate about fluoride in UK's drinking water reached? What actions are being taken by those against it to prevent it? Will it be possible to prevent putting fluoride in our water?

Answer
The public are becoming increasingly more informed on the subject. Again corporate interests seem to be winning at least in the short term. I believe in the near term fluoridation of water will be seen as one of the corporate victories of our time. Lobby groups exist within parliament and the European parliament. The Greens, Independents and several other major blocks are strongly opposed to fluoridation.
