Question
Assalam aleyku.
What is the frequency of passing urine for a three year old?
My grand daughter has a frequency of about ten to fifteen minutes interval, sometimes even less? So much so that I am now forced to put her on pampers (which she had stopped at two and a half years) She also seems strained when passing stool and the frequency is also high. Given that she is very energetic and has a good appetite, should I take her to a doctor?
Answer
Sister Aisha,
This is not normal. The child needs a visit to the doctor. A urine and stool analysis are in order. The problem may be related to some sort of urinary tract infection or salt crystals in her urine, which doctors refer to as crystaluria. Anyhow, she is in need of a doctor's consultation.

Could you please give me some information on skin allergies and itching and how they are treated and on the effects of cortisone on the body?
Thank you
Answer
Brother Nezam,
Skin allergies are one of the most common causes of itching and also cortisone therapy is one of the most used methods for the treatment of skin allergies. Anyhow, topical corticosteroids (used directly on the skin as a cream) do not have the same degree of side effects as systemic corticosteroids, but it is not recommended to use them for prolonged periods of time. You should visit a doctor to determine the suitable type of topical cortisone therapy for your particular condition.

Dear Doctor,
Thank you very much for this service.
What is the best way to treat lice in children's hair? Lice shampoos do not remove the eggs, but they kill them as far as I understand. Do these eggs simply fall off with time? Or must they be removed egg by egg? If they are not removed what might happen? Is there any way to prevent my children from contracting lice? Does cleanliness have anything to do with prevention, or if a child comes into contact with another child that has lice he will contract the lice no matter how clean he is?
thank you
Answer
The provided treatment for lice can kill the egg. Washing with shampoo is sufficient for cleaning the killed eggs.
Continuous washing with regular shampoo is one of the most important manoeuvres for protection, besides avoiding contact with infected children.
Any remaining eggs that have been killed through treatment will not hatch.

I wanted to ask you, doctor, if there was any way I can help my children to be tall. I hear that sports tends to make children taller. Is that true?
Jazak Allah Khair
Answer
You can not do anything to make your children taller or shorter. According to my knowledge, exercises can not help in making the children taller. Anyhow, good nourishment and general health care can help the child to improve his general condition including his height and weight.
If there is a certain problem in the average height of your child, you can consult a specialist and you may be in need of a hormonal assay to evaluate the problem.

Salams Doctor,
Every summer my children take swimming lessons. Almost every summer one of my children especially gets ear infection. What can I do to prevent that? The children also frequently complain that their eyes sting from the water. Is there any way to prevent that also?
Answer
Diving might be a cause for the ear infection. This should be avoided if the child complains of frequent ear infections.
To prevent your children's eyes from stinging, you can use eye drops that contain antiallergic medications.
Drying your chilren's eyes and ears after swimming will also help prevent any complications.

Question
Assalmoaliakom
I have heard conflicting opinions from doctors and friends on when to start feeding my infant child food other than breast milk. Some people say start at 2 months, others say start at 4 and yet others say start at 6 months. Some people say don't even let the baby drink water until 6 months of age, only breast milk. What is your opinion on this?
Jazakallah
Answer
The new trend in feeding children is postponing feeding with external foods up to the age of six months. This is to give the child a good chance for breast feeding. We thus advise you to begin feeding your child with external food at 6 months with cereals.
With regards to water, it is also not recommended that you give your child water in the duration of exclusive lactation.

Salam alikum...I am father of 5 kids alhamdolillah..and from time to time one or more than one of my kids suffers frim a very high body temperature, especialy at night.. How should we reduce the temperature at time. I mean the best way..by the way some time we place moist towels on him or her..
thanks in forward
Answer
As you mentioned, cold, moist towels are the best way to decrease your children's temperature. This is also beside using medication like antipyretic suppositories or oral syrups to decrease the temperature. But consultation is essential to know the cause of the fever to give the child the suitable treatment.
It is recommended that you do not use ice to decrease your child's temperature as it can cause constriction of the blood vessels, which decreases the loss of heat from the skin. Using tap water is thus recommended instead.

Question
Assalamalikoom..I have 2 questions:
1- What are signs that my child is in pain?
2- How can children be treated for pain at home?
jazakumllah
Answer
Crying is a basic sign for the expression of pain in babies. But not all crying children are in pain. There are other reasons for a child's crying.
But I can help you by giving some signs of pain in different parts of the body that denote pain in your child.
For example, pain in the ear causes the child to have abnormal movements of the head and increased crying if we press behind the ear.
Another example is in the case of abdominal pain, causing flexion of the leg onto the abdomen.
A third example is traumatic pain or fracture that increases crying on pressing the injured organ.
Treating pain in children at home depends essentially on giving analgesics. Also antispasmodics (anticolics) are also recommended in abdominal pain.

Question
Assalamu alaykum Doctor.
I have a 12 year old brother with a learning difficulty which has not been labelled. Some think he is just weird or badly behaved. He has an inability to interact with peers, and has difficulties with speech, he is also incredibly shy, so much so that he walks in a 'hunch' to 'hide'. He is also very sensitive and can get very violent, without understanding. I am very worried for him, as he is bullied at school and does not learn anything at all. He seems to act much younger then his age.
Doctor I feel it is something to do with inside his brain, what kinds of tests should I push my family doctor to refer him to. Jazakhallah.
Answer
Your brother needs to visit a psychiatrist who will perform all the necessary tests.

Salams Doctor Nabil,
In your opinion, is it necessary to planned the pregnancy of of our wife? Is it acceptable according to the teaching of Islam?
thanks
Answer
From the medical point of view, spacing pregnancies is very essential for baby and mother to give a good chance for breast feeding for the baby and to give a good chance for the mother to improve her general condition after a long period of pregnancy and breast feeding.
With regards to whether or not spacing is acceptable in Islam, I suggest you send a question to IslamOnline.net's 'Ask the Scholar' section.

How can i prepare ny teenage children before going into medicine. What recommended books can they read or do
Answer
It is better to let the child determine his career and field of study on his own, because the study of medicine is not a hobby, rather it requires a readiness and acceptability to undertake this field of study.
Anyhow, if you want to test their readiness to undertake medicine as their future field of study, let them read science books especially those related to human biology and general scientific books.

Do you think getting pregnant while overweight will harm the child ?
Thank you
Answer
Of course being overweight during pregnancy or in general is not healthy.
Anyhow, if the problem is just overweight without any underlying diseases, there is no problem in getting pregnant with regards to the baby, except that there may be some difficulty for both the mother and the baby during labor.

What are the causes of jaundice in newborn babies?
Answer
Jaundice (yellowish discoloration of the skin) is a broad term. Jaundice itself is not a disease, but it is a sign and symptom of many diseases.
The most common cause of jaundice in the newly born is physiological jaundice. Newly born children are born with an increased number of red blood cells after labor resulting from normal hypoxia (decrease of oxygen) that occurs during pregnancy. After labor, the oxygen supply is improved resulting in an increase in the rate of destruction of the extra red blood cells that have formed and this leads to the appearance of what is known as physiological jaundice.
There are other causes of jaundice in the newly born related to blood diseases or liver diseases. Also, some medications given to the mother during pregnancy or some medications given to the baby after birth may cause jaundice in the newly born.
In every condition you are in need of medical consultation to determine the definite cause of jaundice in the newly born.

my 6 year old boy is seen most of the time his penis erected and he desperately tries to rub it on the body of others or on the bed may be to get rid of the tickling he has.is it abnormal. does it require any treatment?
Answer
Erection of the penis begins in some children when they are small infants. I think that every mother has seen the erected penis of her child on more than one occassion in the newly born period.
Also, the desire to play with the organ is present in an early period of life. Most children pass through this period peacefully without any problems. Some children may complain from hypersensitivity of the organ, leading to some sort of what we call early masturbation. Dealing with this problem is essentially related to the mother, not to the physician. Ignoring the child's increased interest in his organ and not punishing the child is the best policy in dealing with the child during this period.

Question
what are frist aids can any mother do for her child when he ate any thing bad
Answer
Trying to evacuate the stomach by inducing vomiting is a good manoeuvre in this situation. This can be done by making pressure on the back of the tongue or by drinking salted water. But there are other recommendations according to the type of bad substance.
For example, if the child ingested a caustic substance such as potash, induction of vomiting is not recommended, rather it might be harmful as it might lead to the aspiration of the caustic material which thus reaches the lung. Drinking milk is the preferred method for first aid in this case.
Anyhow, all these manoeuvres are a sort of first aid and must be followed by a visit to the emergency room where a stomach wash will be performed if needed and a suitable antedote will be given to the child according to the substance ingested.

Answer
You probably mean juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and not rheumatism. If this is the case, this is not an inherited disease.
