Question
Dear Sir,

Assalam-o-Alaikum,

May Allah SWT be pleased with you. My questions are:

1) What is diabetes?

2) How many kinds of it are there?

3) How does a person get it? Is it from eating too much sugary stuff?
and can a person get it if his/her skin or hands get in contact with saliva or urine of the diabetic person.

4) How is it confirmed that a person has it?

5) I read on the net somewhere that too much foam in urine might be an indication that a person is loosing too much protein and therefore might have diabetes?

My apologies, if my questions are too many and a bit basic, but I hope you can give us a general info.

I am 30 years old male and one of my grandma has diabetes, i am not sure which kind. So is it hereditary?

Thanks for your time and Wa As Salaam.

Answer
Diabetes is a disorder in the blood sugar control.

There are two types:

Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes

Type 2 Adult Diabetes

Regarding the other questions, they need comprehensive explanation, you might take part in and read the questionnaire about Diabetes posted here on IslamOnline.net.

Question
My brother has got Diabetes, he is 35 years old, what is the type of Diabetes in this case? And can he manage through diet, without taking medications?

Answer
What your brother has is Type 2 Diabetes.

Lifestyle modifications are very important. He needs to decrease carbohydrates intake in general - specially sugar. He also should decrease fats in his diet and increase vegetables. He will also need to eat a lot of fat-free proteins.

He may be able to get along without the need for medications. However, this is decided on a case-by-case basis. His physician can decide what is the best approach for him.

Question
I heard that Diabetes can be induced by eating unhealthy food. Is this true? And if yes, what are these foods?

Answer
Yes, Diabetes type 2 can be induced by certain foods.

Foods that are to sweet top the list of harmful foods. They are then closely followed by other types of carbohydrates in general and fats.

On the other hand, Type 1 Diabetes is not induced by food. People are born with it. However, they should still be careful with their diet and control their amount of sugar intake.

Question
Asalaam aleykum brother,

I would like to know what`s the strictly types of foods which a diabetic person has to avoid at all cost? I mean individual types of food and not in general.
And another question if I may, when you are on your medication i.e metformin twice daily can you be a little bit easy in your daily diet?

Jazahkumllah khairan

Answer
Any foods that contain sugars should be off limits. Also carbohydrates should be decreased in your diet. Using unsaturated oils such as olive oil and corn oil is much better than saturated oils like palm oil.

Fruits can be taken up to 3 servings a day except dates, figs, and grapes - because these contain a lot of sugars.

When you are on medications, you can eat a bit more sugar because the medicines will be controlling Diabetes. However, you have to monitor what you eat and come up with a plan with your Diabetes doctor.

Question
My sister has Diabetes during pregnancy, will it clear after she gives birth?

Answer
Diabetes can develop during pregnancy in a woman who hasn't previously had the condition. This type of Diabetes is called "gestational diabetes". It affects around 2 percent of women during prgnancy.

Most pregnant women who have gestational diabetes return to normal after giving birth. However, she should be under supervision and measure her blood glucose level regularly after giving birth to make sure that she does not remain diabetic.

When blood sugar is well-controlled, it will certainly lead to less complications on the long run.

Question
My friend's brother turned out to be diabetic. He is still 10 years old. How can they control his diet in this young age. I appreciate your help.

Answer
Since he developed diabetes at this early age then he probably has Type 1 Diabetes. That means that he will have to take insulin shots. The first thing that will be done is for his doctor to tailor his insulin dose. Once this is settled he must do regular medical follow-ups to make sure the dose is still well-adjusted as he grows.

I know it is difficult for a child to give up eating sweets, but his family should try to help him as much as possible since diet is a very important factor in controlling diabetes more effectively.

Good Luck.

Question
Assalamu alaikum

I am 50-years-old and I have had Type II Diabetes for about 5 years. Is this cured eventually by the medicines or will I have to take the medicines for my entire life?

Secondly, do I have to avoid even the fruits (which also have some sugar in them), or can I take them in moderate quantities?

Jazakallah khair.

Answer
Diabetes is a life long disease. That means it will not be cured, but it can be handled and managed through the use of drugs as well as lifestyle changes. This is exactly like other chronic diseases such as hypertension for example.

The disease will not disappear completely, however, there are things that can be done to help avoid any complications.

Your second question has been answered in a previous question, Kindly refer to it.

Question
My friend has Juvenile Diabetes, and she is about to marry this year, can she get pregnant and give birth normally?

Answer
She can get pregnant normally, and can also gives birth normally.

But she must take a point into consideration. She needs to have very strict control of her blood sugar levels through diet and insulin during the whole pregnancy period.

Uncontrolled diabetic women are vulnerable to deliver stillbirth or obese children. In this case she might have annoying complications during the time of delivery.

Otherwise she'll be alright. Good luck!

Question
Dear Dr.

I am diabetic for a year now. I feel hot palms at all times as well as occasional hot bottom feet. I also feel cold sides of legs. What could be the treatment for this problem.

Thanks

Answer
This might be due to uncontrolled diabetes.

The first thing to do is to try to change to a strict diet as I explained in a previous question. You should also monitor your blood sugar levels regularly to see if they are high.

If you still have the same symptoms, you should visit your physician who might then prescribe you some drugs for this.

Best wishes

Question
For preventing diabetes, especially Type 2, we have to prevent obesity. And to attend that we are advised to do more sports. My question is: are there sports that are allowed for men and not for women and vice versa. Does eating little sugar reduce the chance of getting diabetes?

djazakumu llah

Answer
Of course eating little sugar will decrease your probability of developing diabetes.

I'm not sure that I understood the second part of your question regarding the suitable sports to men and women. But I'm sure that practicing sports will have a good effect as it will decrease obesity, and that eventually makes one less vulnerable to diabetes. It has nothing to do with being a man or a woman or even a child

Many people believe that practicing sports is a luxury. But the truth is it is a basic need for everyone no matter what.
