Question
As-salamu Alaykum,

First of all I want to wish you Happy Ramadan.

I would like to ask how much water should we drink in Ramadan? What foods should we consume in the imsak and iftar and what foods are to be avoided? Can we exercise during Ramadan?

Thank you. May God bless us all in this Ramadan.

Answer
Salam alaikum Naima.

Provided that there are not any associated medical illnesses, drinking water and fluids is important to preserve the tissue-body compostion, but this should be one to one and a half hours before and after meals inorder not to dilute digestive enzymes or else mal-abosorption and mal-digestion may result.

Fluid intake is much recommended from natural sources such as fresh juices without any preservatives.

The most ideal diet suitable for imsak and iftar will be refered to later on.

Exercising should be done during ramadan so long as we divide our meals throughout the eating hours and with a well balanced nutritive ingredients.

I am 8 weeks pregnant and am not sure whether to fast this Ramadan. I have low iron levels at present and am experiencing sickness, tiredness and some dizziness. Would fasting affect the development of the baby in an adverse way? Thank you for your advice.

Salam alaikum Wendy.

The present state of your pregnancy and the fetus condition should be discussed thoroughly with your obstetrician, explaining to him in details your complaints.

Question
Assalam-o-Alikum. I wanted to know how can we prevent migraine during fasting? My mother is almost a "tea" addict, and will have migraine in fasting. Can this be a valid reason for her not fasting?

Answer
Salam alaikum.

Regarding migraines this can be prevented through eating a balanced diet and making your 'sohoor' as late as possible and containing high carbohydrated diet besides the proteins and the minerals. If this migraine is one which is not related to any medical illness, then this could be considered a preventive measure, if otherwise, this should be discussed with your practitioner.

Question
Assalamu Alaikum respected Brother, I am 5 months pregnant, I know that it is not compulsory for me to fast but if I do what would be the best food for me and my baby?

Wassalam..

Answer
Salam alaikum.

A general well-balanced diet will be referred to later. Nevertheless, it is important to drink abundant sugary fluids and it is not mandatory to eat much fat, only the essential fatty acids which could be supplied through eating seafood and fish in general (which contains phosphorus, proteins and essential fatty acids).

Try always to make your iftar as early as possible and your imsak as late as possible, with the proper nutruitive diet.

Question
Assalamualaikum dr. Tareq,

Ramadan Mubarak!

What do you think if I take chocolate to break fast?

As a malaysian, I regularly take rice for iftar. Is it good for generate energy?

Answer
Salam alaikum..

Chocolate is not recommended to break your fast on because it makes your blood sugar rise sharply and suddenly, besides it can cause you heart burn and colics.

Rice is fine in moderate amounts, but the most ideal meal to break your fast on is 'tamr'(dried dates) and milk.

Question
Assalamu Alaykum brother..

I take Metmorfin tablets to control type 2 diabetes (500mg)3 times a day with food or after. My question is how should I take my tablets during the holy month of Ramadan. In addition I would like a general advice on what to eat or avoid during this month. Jazakum Allah..

Answer
Salam alaikum brother.

As for the first part of your question, it is necessary that you consult your physician regarding the exact timing of your meals and your medication according to your specific glucose tolerance and diabetes severity.

Regarding the second part of the question, it is best to avoid mangoes, figs, grapes, sugarcane, beet and to eat dates sparingly. As for vegetables, try to avoid peas, beans, lentils. Fresh green salade vegetables (carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, leafy vegetables etc) are recommended as well as high protein non-fatty meals such as skimmed milk.

Question
What do you say to non-muslims who think that breaking your fast on dates will make your blood-sugar sky-rocket? and do diabetic people have to refrain from eating dates, or does it just not affect them?

Answer
Salam alaikum..

First of all, 'tamr' (dried dates) and milk is a full nutruitive meal which you could break your fast on. It helps to make the absorption of glucose gradual and effective.

Regarding diabetics, wether or not to eat dates, that depends on the severity of the disease and the medication they are on. Wether to eat dates or not, this should be discussed with their physician wether they are fasting or not.

Question
Salamu 3alaykum Brother ... First I would like to wish all the muslims Ramadan Mubarek.

My question refers to losing weight during ramadan. I wake up in the morning (before sunrise) and have breakfast and when it is time to break fast, I have a huge meal but I still tend to lose a lot of weight (i am already skinny as they come). Would you kindly shed some light on which foods are needed to keep me well nourished, energetic and also to help maintian the weight.

Thank you for taking the time to respond and God Bless you.

Answer
Salam alaikum.

Try to eat a very well-balanced diet frequently with foods with concentrated high calories such as dates, figs, bananas, lentils, beet, sugarcane as well as nuts which is a very important supply of fatty oils, essential oils and proteins. It is also very important to eat food rich in vitamins and minerals such as fresh vegetables (including potatoes, squash, artichokes etc...)and juices.

You could also have starchy foods such as macaroni and rice in small amounts frequently. Sweets and desserts could also be resorted to achieve your target.

As for the iftar (as early as possible):
1. Before praying: 2 Dates (dried dates) with a half cup milk.

In between iftar and sohoor:

1. Fresh vegetables such as oranges, gauva, dates, apples, pears etc...

Or

A small piece of oriental desserts with moderate amount of honey syrup and low in fat.

Sohoor: (Best 15-30 minutes before fajr prayer)

Or

One boiled egg (try to avoid egg yolk if you are over 40 years old)

Question
Assalamu'alaikum,

I guess many readers will submit questions to this QA session asking what to eat or not to eat to stay healthy and fresh during Ramadhan. I'm not going to dwell into that because I think I will get good information just by reading this session as it progresses.

My question, however, is more about the time to eat during Ramadhan, and quantity of food to eat at different times during the nights of Ramadhan as this also contributes to our good health.

My questions are:

1) During the Breaking of Fast, how much should we eat before we perform Maghrib Prayer? Is it advisable to take heavy meal i.e. full-course meal, or just light meal such as eating a few dates and a glass of drink?

2) If your advice is to take light meal before Maghrib Prayer, when should we eat heavy meal? Is it preferable that we take full-course meal right after the Maghrib Prayer and before the Isya' Prayer and Tarawikh, and then take more meals before we go to sleep for the night? Or is it preferable to delay our full meal and take it only after Tarawikh Prayer, which is close to midnight?

If possible, please narrate some hadiths of the Prophet (PBUH) or the traditions of our Pious Predecessors on this matter as I believe what they did can contribute to our general health. You may also want to describe how the people in Egypt, or Makkah or Medinah today do from the moment of breaking their fast until they go to sleep for the night, eating-wise.

Thank you in advanced.

Answer
Thank you for your questions Mohamed. These are good questions and have been answered in a previous question.
