It is not easy, but children are very resiliant and responsive to intervention specialy if the family is supportive. We allow children to express themselves, their fears and pain through drawing, painting, writing or talking in a warm environment. We apply child and family methods of therapy ,in addition to individual child counceling. We also work with school teachers.

You have to decide for yourself what best you can do. No one else can. The needs here are enormous and overwhelming from economic to human resources, better schooling etc. But the most important pressing issue for the children and the rest is to end the occupation and bring back some hope into their life.

The children of the stone are an expression of rebellion against all forms of authority particularly the Israeli occupation and in some cases the father authority.
In the case of a typical child the individual quest for freedom was united with the national quest for liberation.
Many of the children were driven out from their homes because of the suffocating environment. They were drawn into the streets to face the Israeli soldiers as the model of the hero became the militant. Many of the children took to risk taking behaviour as the ultimate form of defiance. In a study we conducted on 3000 children in the first Intifada, we found out that 45% of them witnessed the humiliation of their fathers by beating at the hands of israeli soldiers. It is from this pool that we have in the second Intifada the potential suicide bomber, martyers.

For some time Palestinians were proud to have the best education standards in the middle east. However with the suffocating Israeli occupation ,Palestinian education has suffered in terms of lack of facilites, lack of human resources have resulted in deteriorating level of education. In the last 15 years of violence we have lost a generation of poorly educated children or even illitrate. It is very difficult for children to cope with violence and education as their concentration at school is affected.

Israelis should be declared as rogue state behaving outside the international law. Israel should be boycotted by all people ,because governments are influenced by the zionist lobby. Palestinian leadership should rise to the challenge by promoting one state solution with the strategy of nonviolence resistance. Muslims should not allow their religion to be abused and taken hostage by extremists. Islam should be a relegion of love ,reconciliation and harmony and respect of human rights. It is with the world community of peace activists of this kind that we can dismantel the apartheid zionist entity.

I am hoplessly optimistic because I know that within every human being there is a glowing spirit and hope underneath the layers of despair.

Wide world boycott of Israel will absolutely help.People outside who want to help with their money can contact individual organizations. The US is making it difficult for American organizations to help. It is also putting unacceptable conditions on the Palestinian organizations in order to recieve US aid funds.
In our institute for example as in the case of the majority of non governmental community, we do not recieve American help.

It was found that nearly 33% of the Palestinain children exhibit symptoms of severe form of post traumatic stress disorder.
In another piece of research it was found 36% of the boys believe that the best thing in life is to die as a martyer.
In our research we found out that home demolition is the worst kind of trauma.
Nearly 40% of the children survyed believe that the father has an image of importance and helplessnes.
We found out that communicating and warm mother is the best protective factor for the child.

Palestinian children are suffering both physically and mentally as a result of the cruel Israeli occupation.
How can we, as an outside world,force Israel to respect the Palestinian people, and especially the children?

There are many Israeli human rights organizations like PHR-Israel, defence of children and campaign against torture ,who are doing exellent work, exposing Israeli violations.
There are a number of International organizations like Amnesty Int. and Human Rights Watch that have condemned Israel and its brutal policies.
United Nation Security Councuil has passed many resolutions , 42 of them were violated by Israel throught the years.
From all this we realized that in addition to exposing Israeli violations the United Nation itself is unable to force Israel to respect the basic human rights, this is why there is a need to boycott Israel worldwide in all spheres of life, economically, cultrually, academically, diplomatically and more important militarely.
Activists groups everywhere in the world should join together to dismantel the apartheid system in Israel. The experiecne of South Africa is the one we should follow, but that means the Palestinian movement should turn into a non violent strategy in order to win the support of the world.

Arab Governors are hoplessly controled, intimidated and interfered with by the American administration.
The Palestinain Authority has built over 1000 new schools between 1994-2000, but these schools are now suffering from lack of resources.
We hope that Arab people will force their governments into rising against the American domination in dignity. Only then can these governments begin to belong to their own people.

The PA now is so weakened that it is not able to protect itself. I consider that the PA conduct over the years was a direct cause for our tragedy, but today I'm as hostage as they are in the Israeli prison.

My question sir is,I read in the recent Newsweek Magazine how one Isreali Soldier tied a young boy to his truck so that the Palistenians won't throw rocks at the truck.This brought tears to my eyes, because I can only imagine what the poor boy was feeling. What's being done so things like this do not happen. Everyday I see the situation getting worse and worse.
Please help me in coming to terms with this horrible situation that the entire world has closed it's eyes to.HOw can I bring it to light while most of the poeple in the U.S are denying the rights of Palestinians and thinking that the only groups that try to do something are "terrorists".

Thank you for your question. The experience of this boy is a graphic illustration of the Palestinan people life. We are all taken hostage by the Israeli occupation ,who conduct systematic torture, killing and distrcution.
Muslims all over the world should unit and portray the the proper Islam and a beacon of civilization. They should work with forces of light and hope in this world against racism, violence and death.
Muslims should not allow their religion to be abused and taken hostage by some extremists ,who have no respect for human life. The world is wide open for Muslims to join the human march towards a better life for all.

As a Psychiatrist, do you think that the seige impossed on President Yasser Arafat will affect him to the extent that he would accept decisions that may affect the Palestinian cause badly.

Arafat with all his weaknesses has defiantly resisted to accept such decision. However because of his impotence he is unable to provide the proper leadership Palestinians need in this difficult time.
They are bargining now over his life, we have to wait and see if the plan of Sharon would lead to the deposition of Arafat in Gaza.
I believe that after distroying all the elements of a possible Palestinian state by separating Gaza from the West Bank, Israelis will kill Arafat because he would be the last remaining symbol of Palestinians.
It depends on the American success or failure in Iraq.
