The San Aegidio organization of the Catholic Church is an organization dedicated to fostering peace and understanding in regional conflicts. It brought to the Rome meeting an unusual gathering of all Algerian opposition parties, including not only the FIS and some of its more radical splinters, but also the two principal Berber parties and the formerly ruling FLN (National Front of Liberation). The quite moderate recommendations of the San Aegidio Conference were brusquely rejected by the Algerian government but have served to keep alive the idea of compromise which, in different degrees, both the US and French governments support.
