Filipino Bug-Busters On Full Alert

MANILA, Dec 27 (AFP) - Millennium bug-busters in the Philippines are to start a round-the-clock watch from Dec. 28 to Jan. 3 to quickly respond to any disruptions linked to the computer glitch. The millennium bug center had been on eight-hour shifts from December 15, Science and Technology Secretary Filemon Uriarte said in a statement. The center is planning to revert back to eight-hour shifts between January 4 and 15.

Retired Gen. Alexander Aguirre, President Joseph Estrada's national security adviser, leads the center. It has communications links with the government's civil defense office to deal with any emergencies, Uriarte said. Experts from the center will help coordinate technical support for critical sectors: finance, manufacturing, utilities, government services, health care, transportation and telecommunications
