BBC Scientist's Croc Find To Help Fight Superbugs

LONDON (AFP) - A producer working on a science documentary for BBC television has stumbled on a substance that could kill bacteria immune to standard antibiotics, BBC director-general Greg Dyke said.

The discovery was made during filming of saltwater crocodiles in Australia, Dyke said in a speech at London's Science Museum. "Our producer noticed something that surprised her – despite the horrendous injuries the crocodiles inflict on each other, their wounds rarely get infected," he said.

"After many adventures they got their blood samples and last week a leading research institute isolated from these samples what I'm told is a novel antimicrobial peptide. In tests this substance kills strains of virulent bacteria that are resistant to all standard antibiotics." The substance now has a name – Crocodillin.
