New Internet Virus May Have Started In Israel

JERUSALEM (AFP) - A new computer virus some fear may be more destructive than the ILOVEYOU bug may have been started by an Israeli hacker, the newspaper Yediot Aharaonot reported Sunday.

The suspicion comes because the virus, which has infected at least 1,000 computers in Israel and the United States, seems to have first hit the Combors information technology firm, based in a suburb of Tel Aviv.

Police spokesman Ofer Sivan, however, said the evidence was not strong. "Suspicions of Israeli involvement don't weigh up and we have not asked for any investigation," he told AFP.

Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno has asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation to look into the bug. Just two weeks ago, a bug that asked users to open an attachment called ILOVEYOU infected millions of computers around the world.

The new bug, which has been called both "NewLove.VBS" and "Herbie," is potentially more dangerous as it sends a mutated version of itself to all addresses in a computer user's address book before attacking and destroying files on a computer's hard disk.

ILOVEYOU only destroyed sound and picture files. The new bug also changes the subject line and program code every time it is transmitted, making it difficult to detect
