Nigerian Academy of Science Investigates AIDS Cure Claims

LAGOS (AFP) - The Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) has set up a five-man panel to investigate claims by several Nigerians that they have discovered a cure for HIV/AIDS, reported this Monday by the newspaper The Guardian.

In a statement, the Academy appealed to all those making claims to have found a cure to HIV/AIDS to cooperate with fellow scientists and have the claims verified, it said. "The attention of the Nigerian Academy of Sciences has been drawn to claims by some Nigerians of discovery of both prophylactic and therapeutic HIV/AIDS vaccines," said the Academy.

The claims would have "the greatest significance" if proven but still remain to be verified, it said. Among around 100 Nigerians currently claiming to have a cure for HIV/AIDS is doctor Jeremiah Abalaka, who has to date treated more than 800 patients, at an average cost of over 125,000 naira ($1,250 dollars), with a "vaccine" which remains untested by independent scientists.
