Washington, DC (Islam Online) - Researchers believe that they could be on the verge of finding historical documents in a lake located in Grundlsee, Austria. Using a submarine-robot device from the Oceaneering Technologies group, the experts are hoping to have combed the entire lake by the end of June.
Currently, the robotics device has mapped roughly 10% of the lake's floor, searching for documents that are believed to date back to Nazi Germany. The "Phantom" robot began conducting the search this past Saturday, only bringing up materials that were unrelated to what the researchers are looking for.
Properly know as Lake Toplitz, the lake has been the site of previous searches dating back to 1959, 1963, and 1986 all the way up to this current search. The previous searches literally brought out buried treasure, with the researchers having found chests full of counterfeit money that was apparently used by Nazis under the leadership of Adolf Hitler in a bid to force inflation in Britain.
The buried chests were originally investigated after local inhabitants from the nearby town of Salzburg, Germany testified after World War II had concluded in April of 1945 that the Nazis had dumped chests into the lake.
As far as what the research team is looking for in this dive, the specifics are unknown. However, it is possible that they could be looking for more chests or other materials that could have been dumped in the lake during the war
