DEARBORN, Michigan (AFP) - Ford Motor Company and the wireless communications firm Qualcomm announced the creation of a new venture to equip vehicles with wireless services and Internet access.
The new company, known as Wingcast, will add the new communications devices to more than a million new Ford cars and trucks by the end of 2002, three million by 2003 and nearly all its vehicles by the end of 2004, according to Ford.
"We are not only transforming the automobile into the next mobile portal but also are creating a new company that will develop and deliver a collection of leading-edge technologies and services,' said Ford chief executive Jac Nasser.
The goal is to provide drivers with "seamless access" to information, navigation, entertainment and safety services from their cars and trucks.
