Indian Software Lobby To Form Cybercop Committee

NEW DELHI (AFP) - India's main software industry body is forming a cybercop committee to help Internet website owners repel aggressive attacks from computer hackers, its president said Monday.

"We want to provide basic website security services to government or private individuals in an advisory capacity," said National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) head Dewang Mehta.

The committee, comprising IT experts in government and the software industry, police and anti-hacking specialists, will meet for the first time on March 1. "We originally planned to begin operations in the summer, but the recent attacks on major Internet sites like Yahoo prompted us to bring things forward," Mehta said.

Besides computer search engine Yahoo!, on-line retailers Amazon.com and Buy.com and trading sites Datek and E*Trade have all suffered attacks in the past week that temporarily jammed their networks.

"We had a lot of calls from worried Indian companies who wanted advice," said Mehta, adding that NASSCOM had received reports of attacks on 121 Indian websites in the past year. "This is an area where things move very fast, so we will be creating our own website so that we can provide updates on security options as soon as they evolve."

Mehta also pointed out that the Internet security market could prove to be a significant export revenue earner for Indian software companies. On average, Indian websites spend less than 0.1 per cent of their total expenditure on security, as against 5% in developed countries
