Virgin To Give Away 10,000 Internet Appliances Linked To Its Portal WASHINGTON (AFP) - Virgin Entertainment Group recently said it is giving away 10,000 new Web appliances which provide Internet access without a desktop computer, as part of an electronic commerce initiative. The flat-screen appliances connect users immediately to the Virgin portal but can be used to surf the web and send and receive email. The New York-based Internet Appliance Network (IAN) makes the device. "It's a new way to access the Net without the cumbersomeness of the PC," said David Murrow, a spokesman for IAN. Murrow said Virgin plans to give away the appliances to "qualified applicants" who meet certain criteria, such as use of online shopping. Those who do not get the devices free can obtain them for $50 a year, he added. The appliances will be equipped with a browser developed by Canadian-based Espial.
