Social Issues Top Among Voter Concerns

As the Election 2000 draws closer in the United States, Democrats and Republicans alike are rushing to speak about what most concerns the voters. The Washington Post conducted to separate surveys during the period from October 13-17 and October 27-31. With nearly a 1,000 adults responding to each survey nationwide, the Post was able to gather information on a total of 51 national concerns. Special interest was given to two groups (young married couples and older people) since they are considered swing voters, i.e. they are likely to vote less for party preference than for the candidate who seems to be most aligned with their concerns. Topping the concerns were healthcare, violence, education and illegal drug use.
