Deadbeat Arab League Countries Asked To Pay Up

DOHA, Dec 4 (AFP) - Arab League secretary general Esmat Abdel Meguid called Saturday for members to pay arrears to the financially troubled pan-Arab group.

"Most member states have not paid their dues" and "the Arab League is carrying out its functions with enormous difficulty," said Abdel Meguid, quoted by the official Qatari news agency QNA.

The beleaguered league's 22 members owe a total of $135 million, of which nearly $35 million is contested by countries that want to renegotiate their dues. Only six countries are entirely paid up: Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

In June, finance ministers agreed to a phased payment of money owed since 1990 at the end of an extraordinary session of the league's higher financial committee in Cairo.

The secretary general is to meet Qatar's ruler, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, on Sunday.
