Iran Asks Saudi Arabia To Lift Quota On Pilgrims

WASHINGTON (Islam Online) -Iran called on Saudi Arabia to lift restrictions on the number of pilgrims allowed to make (Hajj) pilgrimage every year. "We hope that these limits will be lifted so that pilgrims can make the Hajj," said Mohammad Mohammadi-Reyshari, Iranian official in charge of pilgrimage. The quota system limits the number of pilgrims to 1,000 for each one million citizens from Iran.

This restriction was imposed on Iran 1987, after Iranians held anti-U.S. and anti-Israeli demonstrations during the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. The demonstrations sparked clashes with Saudi security forces, leaving 402 people dead.

The result of the incident ruptured relations between the two countries but ties have since improved. President Mohammad Khatami made a landmark visit to Saudi Arabia last year, the first to the kingdom by an Iranian president since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
