Her father was shocked by the school principal's utter refusal to have Islamic dress in a Christian school. He had to move Zainab to a secular public school for his child.

Mindanao is a tale of brutality and ethnic political domination. The central government of Manila is accused by the Moros of being hegemonistic and oppressive. The presidency in Manila, while denying these accusations, played the military option by strengthening its armed presence in the southern region. The Christians took advantage of rampant poverty in the region to attempt to convert more Muslims to become bearers of the cross, an element that raised the ire of the Muslim fighters. The armed campaign gained momentum to the point that the Moros were controlling a large section of the southern Philippines, which has a vast Muslim majority of 6 million.
