Malaysia: Ruling Party Still Rules, But Islamists Make Big Gains
The ruling coalition won Malaysia's general election by taking another two-thirds majority of the 193 parliamentary seats. The results were expected, but Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed failed to stop a strong push by the Party Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), which made history by winning two states and 30 parliamentary seats, up from eight seats in the last parliament. Mahathir won these elections with a reduced majority from that of 1995, in terms of votes and seats. This time around his win was tainted with a severe reduction in state seats and a strong push by the Islamic party.

Iran's intelligence and security ministry announced late last week that it had uncovered a plot by a religious extremist group to assassinate three top leaders of the country. The ministry did not say when it had uncovered the alleged plot. The disclosure of the plot comes at a particularly significant juncture in Iranian politics. The conflict between the conservatives and liberals has reached a new high.

Egyptian Minister: Religion A Good Way To Combat Globalization
Egyptian Youth Minister Ali a-Din Hilal said that the strengthening of religious and patriotic fervor is "the right path to combat the dangers of globalization." The statements were unusual for a top official whose government is violently opposed to Islamist groups.
