SHTAURA, Lebanon, Feb 2 (AFP) - The Lebanese military detained nine people here Wednesday for questioning about alleged ties to members of the Takfir wa Hijra group who clashed with troops in northern Lebanon at the beginning of the month, security services said.
Takfir wa Hijra is a hardline Sunni group that opposes Arab governments for being un-Islamic.
About 50 soldiers searched the Qaraun area about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Beirut where they found three storehouses for weapons. "They confiscated two truckloads of explosives, light weapons, mortars and rockets for rocket-propelled grenades," a security service officer said.
Ten people were initially taken in for questioning but one was later released and two others were still being sought, he added.
The searches were part of an open investigation following clashes in the mountains of northern Lebanon in which 25 Takfir members, 11 soldiers and five civilians died. Some 3,000 troops were mobilized to defeat the 150 to 200 insurgents in the mountainous area.
The police then rounded up a number of Islamists from Tripoli, the main city in northern Lebanon, and questioned five officials.
