The mosque was set ablaze during fighting which broke out yesterday morning between local Christian Ibo youths and Muslim Hausa youths in Aba, a town in Abia State.
"Fighting erupted this morning in Aba but we still do not know the scope. I think they were retaliating over the death of Ibo traders in Kaduna last week," said the official speaking from the governor's office in the Abia State capital Umuahia.
Hundreds of people were killed in two days of clashes between Muslims and Christians in Kaduna last week. Many of those killed were ethnic Ibos. In the town of Kachia, close to the city of Kaduna, 65 people died in clashes between Muslims who Christians.
One of those killed was a policeman, said Fred Omono, the Assistant Commissioner of police in charge of a nearby town. Christians who form the majority in the town intimidated Muslims and had taken refuge in an old army school on the Kachia-Kaduna road.
The largely Christian Ibo are Nigeria's third largest ethnic group, living mainly in southeastern Nigeria. The mainly Muslim Hausa are the largest ethnic group and live largely in the north.
