Cholera Kills 15 Refugees In Uganda

KAMPALA, Nov 27 (AFP) - Some 15 people have died of cholera in refugee camps in Uganda's western Bundibugyo district during the past week, local officials said Saturday.

Seven of the victims succumbed to the disease while being treated at a health center on Saturday morning, a local administrator said. Seven other cholera patients were admitted in Kibasu health center on Saturday, where their condition was reported to be serious, he said.

The cholera outbreak has been blamed on poor sanitation and inadequate medical supplies in the camps housing people who have fled fighting between government troops and rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).

The ADF, an alliance of Islamists and remnants of defunct rebel groups in western Uganda, has been fighting to destabilize the government of President Yoweri Museveni since 1996.

The violence has displaced an estimated 60,000 people in Bundibugyo and Kasese districts.
