Palestinians Lash Out Against Tyranny Of Palestinian Authority

JERUSALEM, Nov 27 (AFP) - Twenty leading Palestinians called Saturday for their people to oppose the "tyranny" and "corruption" of the Palestinian Authority led by Yasser Arafat. They accused the authority of "practicing a horrible policy of corruption and exploitation of the Palestinian people and charged that Arafat "opened the door for exploiters to do as they liked."

The signatories said they were "hurt deeply by what has become of sacred Palestinian Arab land," which they said the Authority had promised to turn into a "new Singapore" following the 1993 Oslo accords with Israel.

"After six years, more land is despoiled, Jewish settlements have grown, they plot behind closed doors against Palestinian refugees and our sons are kept behind bars in Israeli jails," they wrote in the petition.

"Jerusalem will not come back, there will be no Singapore," they said, deploring that "while a minority steals and dominates, the majority complains and seeks salvation."

"The economic situation is going to deteriorate, all the institutions are threatened with destruction," they wrote.

"We must sound the alarm in every village, city, camp, store, house, office: the homeland is being sold off, we must unite against this tyranny, against this corruption. Injustice can only be stopped by the oppressed," it added.
