Human Rights Watch charged Russian troops of killing more than 62 Chechen civilians in the Aldi district in southern Grozny. Refugees returning to the Chechen capital continue to find dead bodies of relatives killed by the Russian army in several districts of the paralyzed city. 50 Chechen civilians were executed in the district of Staropromyslovski, with 5 others in the district of Oktyabrski. "It is becoming increasingly clear that these are not isolated incidents. We are uncovering a pattern of summary executions throughout Grozny," said Holly Cartner, Executive Director of the Europe and Central Asia Division of Human Rights Watch.
French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin again was criticized for his comments about Hezbollah, this time coming from Muslim and Arab media. Jospin also faced criticism from France, as President Jacques Chirac sharply rebuked Jospin as well. Jospin has been under fire for the past week for ignorant remarks that he made, referring to the Lebanese military, and more specifically Hezbollah, as committing terrorist acts. Jospin was quoted last Thursday as saying, "France condemns Hezbollah's attacks, and all types of terrorist attacks which may be carried out against soldiers or possibly Israel's civilian population."
