Muslim Brotherhood Urges Jordan To Reverse Hamas Deportations

AMMAN, Nov 26 (AFP) - Jordan's opposition Muslim Brotherhood on Friday urged the government of Prime Minister Abdel Rauf Rawabdeh to reverse last week's deportation of Jordanian leaders of the Palestinian Islamic group Hamas.

"We ask the government anew to reverse its decision to deport the brothers in Hamas from their homeland and to resolve the issue in an appropriate way that satisfies everyone," the Brotherhood said in a statement.

The group, which mediated in vain to find a solution between the government and Hamas, said a deal could have been worked out but hinged on the government's opposition to giving Hamas "freedom of movement" in Jordan.

The appeal comes two days after Rawabdeh warned that his government would firmly oppose any efforts by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) to mount attacks on Jordan or any other attempt to undermine security in the kingdom.

Rawabdeh issued his warning in parliament after the deportation of the four, all of whom hold Jordanian nationality, to Qatar last Sunday.

Hamas political bureau official Musa Abu Marzuq, who was expelled from Jordan in September, said in Damascus earlier this month that Hamas could review a 1993 agreement to refrain from military activities against Israel launched from Jordan.

Rawabdeh listed a series of other infringements of the accord that led to an unprecedented crackdown on the group in August and the closure of its offices in Amman.

Many Jordanians accused their government of succumbing to American and Israeli pressure to carry out the unpopular deportation.
