MOSCOW, Nov 24 (AFP) - The former Soviet republic of Turkmenistan is planning to legalize polygamy, President Saparmurad Nyazov announced Wednesday. The written consent of the first wife will be needed before a man can take a second wife, however, Nyazov said, according to the Interfax news agency.
Polygamy has a long history in Muslim Turkmenistan, which was only broken by a few decades of Soviet rule, the president of the Central Asian republic said.
In neighboring Tajikistan, multiple marriages are widespread even though they are not allowed by law.
In the Russian Caucasus republic of Ingushetia, on the border with rebel Chechnya, polygamy under Muslim principles has also been allowed although the authorities in Moscow are trying to annul the decree.
