Professor Released From Jail Recounts Palestinian Repression
When Israel granted the Palestinians limited self-rule in parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1995, many thought that it was the beginning of freedom and independence. But the experience of the Palestinians under a government from their own people, the Palestinian Authority, does not indicate much progress toward freedom or independence.


The African-American group Nation of Islam began a four-day conference on, "Living up to our responsibility as Muslims in establishing Islam in the new millennium" in Chicago on Thursday.Organizers said the conference is "the crowning event" of Black History Month in the United States.


Efforts to bring an end to the horror and tension in the restive Indonesian province of Aceh have dashed as fighting there escalates. The army, helped by local police units in Aceh, has started a war of attrition that is sapping the morale of the civilians and forcing the freedom fighters of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) to be more violent.
