Croatian Muslim-Torturer To Appear Before War Crimes Tribunal

THE HAGUE, March 22 (AFP) - Croatia's most notorious war crimes suspect, Bosnian Croat Mladen Naletilic, will appear before the U.N. war crimes tribunal for the first time Friday to answer to charges, tribunal spokesman Jim Landale said Wednesday.

Also known as "Tuta," the 53-year-old former underworld godfather is expected to present his plea during the hearing.

Croatia extradited Naletilic to The Hague-based tribunal Tuesday after a month-long battle.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has charged Naletilic with crimes against humanity and war crimes for his role in the ethnic cleansing of Muslims in the Mostar region during the 1993-94 Muslim-Croat conflict.

He formed a special paramilitary unit for the purpose in 1991 and systematically tortured prisoners with his co-accused Vinko Martinovic, according to the formal accusation.

The former Yugoslav secret service agent was indicted in December 1998, but Croatia had refused until Tuesday to grant his extradition, citing his alleged poor health.

Martinovic was extradited in August and is accused of the same charges as Naletilic.
