Maon Farm, Palestine- Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak's call for peace took a step back when militant Jewish settlers quickly built a synagogue in an outpost in the Westbank on Wednesday. The building of the Jewish temple was an outright defiance against Barak and the entire peace process. The synagogue immediately became erect when news that the Israeli government would dismantle 12 of 42 outposts throughout Israel. The Maon Farm outpost is one that Jewish extremist setup without the approval of the government. The outposts were recently created so Israelis could claim the areas of land as theirs. Barak plans to dismantle them as soon as possible so the road to peace with the Palestinians can begin as soon as possible.
Opponents of the peace process from all over Israel flocked to the site and built metal walls to keep it safe from Israeli soldiers. The creation of the synagogue was an attempt to create a so-called "symbolic expression." So that people can make the claim that the entire land of Israel is for the Jews, including the Westbank. Barak said that the government will impose any means necessary in order to make peace, after more than fifty years of fighting the Palestinians. All the settlements built by Israel after the 1967 Middle East War, in which it captured the entire Westbank, are illegal under United Nations resolutions. Meanwhile, Barak convened with Israelis government officials to lay the groundwork for physical and economic separation form the Westbank and Gaza strip in order to create an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its' capital. One Israeli government official said that Barak's panel will meet Thursday to discuss different proposals. One suggestion was a 108 mile long buffer area that would be created with government authorized entry points into Israel. An unidentified source said this was the most popular plan so far. Many Palestinian delegates urged Israel not to take such acts of separation without asking the Palestinians. Leader of the Palestinian delegation, Yassar Abed Rabbo said, "The economic separation should be based on a political solution reached through final status talks and after identifying the International borders are of Palestinian sovergniety These outposts are crucial to the peace process because their dismantling is a sign of Israeli willingness for peace. Millions of Palestinians must work in the occupied territories, just to feed their families. Many of them constantly go through unnecessary checkpoints to get to their places of employment. In the next coming months, many experts believe it will be rocky for both the Palestinians and the Israelis because they will determine the political and economic future for the entire Middle East region.
