Egyptian Pilots Demand Flights To Iraq Be Resumed

CAIRO (Islam Online) - The Egyptian Pilots' Association demanded flights to resume to and from Iraq, said Walid Murad, head of the Association.

"If I am asked personally to fly a rented plane with business men and medical staff and medical supplies on board, I would certainly do it, specially when the Iraqi people are suffering from the economic sanctions," he said.

Ibrahim AlDemeri, Egyptian Transportation Minister said that it is premature to discuss such an issue, adding that the economics of opening the flight line to Iraq is, to a great extent, dependent upon a decision to resume the flights.

But Fahim Rayan, Egyptair's chairman said the decision has to be made by the government first. Once such a decision is made, the national carrier will resume flights immediately.

Four flights have landed since the opening of the Saddam International Airport in Baghdad last August; three Russian and one French.

Egyptair resumed it flights to Libya, another country that had faced international air travel sanctions, on August 13th, with two weekly flights to Tripoli. The airline is expected to add another flight to Benghazi on Wednesday.

Libyan officials are expected to attend a celebration at Benghazi airport whne flights resume.
