Poor Conditions For Millions Of Refugees In Azerbaijan

by Ali Elewa

CAIRO (Islam Online) - The general secretary of the Human Relief committee in the Egyptian Doctor's Syndication has warned of deteriorating conditions under which more than one million refugees from Azerbaijan live.

The refugees fled their homes after Armenia occupied the Nagorno Karabakh region, a part of the Azerbaijan Muslim republic.

They live in camps along a 30-kilometer zone 250 kilometers from Baku, the administrative capitol, and are deprived of the bare necessities like sanitary water, medical service, education and heat in freezing weather, said Abd ElKader Higazi, M.D.

In addition, children and the elderly in the camps suffer severe malnutrition.

In an interview with Islam Online, Higazi said he has been able to review the current situation during his participation in conferences held in Azerbaijan under the auspices of the U.N concerning the development opportunities available to the refugees.

The Egyptian delegation to the conference has given medical aid to around 400 Azerbaijani families.

Higazi said the situation is grave because there are very few physicians compared to thousands of refugees. Making matters worse, the nearest pharmacy is located 30 kilometers away.

The Azerbaijani government has adopted a project to allocate each family a piece of land, but faces problems in raising the necessary funds.

It has been calling on human relief organizations and international governments to provide aid to the refugees and to exert pressure on the Armenian government to relocate the refugees back to their homes in Nagorno Karabakh.
