CAIRO (Islam Online) - Jordanian government officials announced on Wednesday that Prime Minister Al Abu AlRagheb intends to visit Iraq some time soon, probably before the end of September, in what would be the first visit by a Jordanian high official in ten years. The visit coincides with Jordan's desire to gain U.N. approval for resuming air flights between the two countries. Jordan "has presented a petition to the U.N. to resume flights with Iraq, and we are waiting for a reply," said Taleb AlRefa'ee, Jordan's Media Minister on Wednesday. In addition, the Jordanian Cabinet has been studying efforts pursued by King Abdullah to lift the economic sanctions on the Iraqi people, AlRefa'ee added. Iraq has called upon Amman relentlessly to open its airports for mutual trips between the two countries, arguing that no international resolutions should prevent them from doing so. Four of Iraq's national airline planes have been on the ground in Amman since the Gulf War. Last April, Jordanian authorities ordered a small Italian airplane, coming from Iraq and carrying European activists opposing the sanctions, to land at its airport for violating Jordanian airspace. |
