Malaysia To Introduce Islamic Business Ethics Code

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Malaysia plans to introduce an Islamic code of business ethics to check unhealthy trade practices among Muslim businessmen, a minister said Sunday.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Muhiddin Yassin was quoted by the national news agency Bernama as saying the code has been drafted and should be introduced by the end of the year.

Muhiddin said the code was not a law that had to be obeyed but merely contained guidelines for Muslim traders to conduct their businesses according to Islam.

He described the ethics code as an "educational process" to help businessmen guard against greed and oppression, and to encourage them to fulfill their social obligations.

Non-Muslim businessmen are welcome to adopt the guidelines, which contain universal values, he added.

Bernama reported that the Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations welcomed the move, which it said was long overdue.
