KHARTOUM (AFP) - Sudan charged Saturday that "a certain group" is conspiring to undermine the government and cited recent student riots in the east and west of the country as examples. The official SUNA news agency quoted an unidentified "official" security source as saying there was "a plot by a certain group targeting the country's unity, social structure and citizens' safety by inciting disorder and riots in the country's different states." The source did not name names but government officials earlier accused the opposition People's National Congress (PNC) led by Hassan al-Turabi of inciting riots in Fashir in western Sudan. A female student was killed and more than 10 persons wounded in the riots protesting a delay in the re-opening of schools and shortages in electricity and water. The PNC was also accused of being the hidden hand behind student demonstrators protesting against the imposition of school fees in Port Sudan. A SUNA security source said the group "exploited some shortages in services" in the two states to persuade the students to demonstrate, "while the governments of those states began, in coordination with the federal government [in Khartoum], to address the shortages." The source said the authorities "are in possession of all the information about the plot," are watching the situation closely and "will take stern measures necessary for thwarting the conspiracy and safeguarding the country." |
