Turkish Weightlifter Breaks His Own Record To Win The Gold

CHICAGO (Islam Online) - Turkish Weightlifter Halil Mutlu broke his own record to win a gold medal at the Sydney Olympics on Saturday.

Mutlu, defending Olympic champion for the men's 56 kg snatch lifted 138 kg in his third and final attempt to beat his own record of 137.5 kg, which he lifted at the world championships at Athens in November 1999.

Mutlu, the smallest man at the competition and who lifted three times more than his own weight is a national hero in Turkey.

Other medal winners from Muslim countries included Smagulov Aiktyn who won a bronze in the Men's Judo Extra-lightweight division.
