When asked about the Israeli leaders' intention to take a time-out from the peace process, Arafat reportedly said, "In any case, Barak could go to hell."

Arafat also said that Palestinians will continue to fighting for a Palestinian-controlled Jerusalem and that the city would eventually be the capital of an independent Palestinian state.

Israel Radio reported that in response to Barak's time-out statement, a Palestinian Television newsreader said, "The Palestinian people are left no choice but to take what is theirs whether Barak likes it or not."

Accusing Israel of massacring Palestinians, the recently concluded Arab League summit said: "Arab states will prosecute according to international law those who caused these barbaric practices and demand that the [U.N.] Security Council form a special international criminal court to try Israeli war criminals."

Before the summit, Tunisia announced that it would be breaking its ties with Israel.

According to a Tunisian foreign ministry statement, the move was decided upon because of "the dangerous and bloody escalation resulting from Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people," and, "the growing number of dead and wounded among unarmed Palestinian civilians."
