Hezbollah Smashes Israeli Spy Networks In Lebanon

KUWAIT CITY (AFP) - Lebanon's Hezbollah movement has smashed a number of Israeli spy networks following its announcement of the capture of an Israeli reserve colonel, a Kuwaiti daily said Wednesday.

Quoting unnamed sources, Al-Rai Al-Aam said Hezbollah capitalized on the Israeli confusion that followed Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah's announcement Sunday of Elhanan Tannenbaum's capture to uncover a number of Israeli intelligence networks.

It said Israel activated its spy networks in Lebanon for a few hours to verify Nasrallah's announcement, which enabled Hezbollah to act.

A number of arrests may have been made, said the paper, describing the new operation as equally important to that of the previous capture of three Israeli soldiers and of Tannenbaum.

The story first began to unfold on Sunday, when Nasrallah announced that the fiercely anti-Israeli Hezbollah had taken prisoner an Israeli colonel involved in a "complex operation."

The news stunned Israel, after the capture of three of its soldiers by Hezbollah on the border with Lebanon little more than a week earlier.

Israel launched a frantic investigation, suspecting a kidnapping on the border, but the army found that no officer on active service was missing and began casting the net further afield.

Later, a relative of Tannenbaum reported him missing to the foreign ministry and several hours later it became clear he was the man being held by Hezbollah.

Nasrallah said on Monday that Tannenbaum was arrested in Lebanon.
