Malaysia's Petronas Unit Wins Contract In Sudan

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Malaysia's national oil firm, Petronas, said Wednesday that one of its subsidiaries has been retained as management consultant for the second phase of an oil project in Sudan.

The Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Co. (GNPOC) has appointed OGP Technical Services Sdn. Bhd. to oversee the second phase of the Muglad Basin Oil Development project, Petronas said in a statement.

OGP will manage the engineering and construction of facilities to develop two new oil fields in the basin and provide other services.

OGP also handled the first phase of the project, which was completed in the middle of last year.

With the completion of the second phase in mid-2002, the project will produce another 50,000 barrels of oil daily, in addition to the average of 185,000 barrels currently, Petronas added.

GNPOC is a consortium comprising China National Petroleum Corp. with a 40% stake, Petronas with 3%0, Talisman Energy Corp. with 25% and Sudapet Ltd. with five percent.
